LANCASTER, PA - Franklin & Marshall College center Lauren Dodrill (Sr., Timonium, MD/Roland Park) recorded 16 points and seven rebounds to lead Franklin & Marshall College in a 78-50 loss to Johns Hopkins University in the Mayser Center to conclude the 2005 season.
Dodrill, who finishes her career with 612 points, connected on seven-of-13 from the field and two-of-seven at the free throw line as she and fellow seniors Maura Lentz (Sr., Baltimore, MD/Catonsville) and Kim Rawson (Sr., Woodstock, NH/Plymouth) conclude their careers at the College.
Trailing 29-22 at halftime, the Diplomats saw the lead expand as Hopkins rattled off a 10-0 run behind a pair of lay-ups by Ashanna Randall to push the margin out to 39-22 with 16:58 to play.
Franklin & Marshall attempted to cut into the lead as Dodrill hit a free throw, but the Blue Jays responded with a 3-0 run before Christy Strunk (Jr., Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) connected on a three-pointer to pull F&M to within 42-26 with 14:01 left on the clock.
The teams traded baskets until Katie Kimball hit a jumper at 13:01 for a 46-28 lead to start an 8-0 run over the next four minutes to put Hopkins in front 54-28 with 9:20 left on the clock.
The Diplomats cut the lead to 23 points as Lentz hit a free throw and a jumper at 8:30, but Hopkins began to increase the lead to record the 28-point victory.
For F&M, guard Dana Johns (Jr., York, PA/Eastern York) tallied 11 points and a team high eight rebounds with six assists and seven turnovers, while Lentz and Strunk each chipped in seven points.
Randall led Hopkins with 14 points, including the 1,000th point of her career on a free throw at the 11:12 mark of the second half, while Whitney Davis added 13, Kimball tallied 12 points and 11 rebounds, Julie Miller netted 11 points and Alissa Burkholder finished with 10 points in the victory.
The key to the game for Hopkins was the Blue Jays second half shooting performance as JHU connected on 20-of-33 from the field (60.6%), including two-of-five from beyond the arc (40.0%), and seven-of-11 from the free throw line (63.6%), while holding F&M to 31.3% from the field (10-of-32), 25.0% from beyond the arc (two-of-eight) and 50.0% (six-of-12) at the free throw line to outscore the Diplomats 49-28 down the stretch.
The Diplomats appeared to be in control of the game in the first half as Johns drained a three pointer and Dodrill knocked down a lay-up for a 5-0 lead 61 seconds into the game. Hopkins rallied to take an 8-7 lead as the margin see-sawed to a 15-15 tie with 9:28 left in the first half.
Franklin & Marshall took the lead at 18-15 as Dodrill made a free throw and a lay-up on successive trips down the court, but Ashley Felix hit a lay-up and Kimball swished a three-pointer to start a 7-0 run by the Blue Jays to take a 24-18 lead with 3:18 to play in the half.
Brittany Braxton (Fr., Pearl River, NY/Nanuet) connected on a lay-up to slice the margin to 24-20 with 3:03 left in the half, but Burkholder broke loose for a three-pointer at the 2:03 mark to push the margin out to seven points. The teams traded points over the last minute of play as Braxton made a pair of free throws at :46.4 before Randall hit a jumper at :21 for a 29-22 Hopkins' lead the break.
The loss ends Franklin & Marshall's season as the Diplomats finish 11-14, 9-9 in Centennial Conference play, one game back of fifth place Gettysburg, while Hopkins improves to 22-3, 16-2 in the Centennial Conference and will continue the season versus McDaniel College on February 26 in the CC playoffs.
