Dickinson Upsets #16 Franklin & Marshall 18-12 in Men's Lacrosse

CARLISLE, PA - Scott Dalgliesh scored five goals and dished out three assists, while Ed Boyd scored five goals and recorded one assist to lead Dickinson College to an 18-12 upset of #16 Franklin & Marshall College in Centennial Conference men's lacrosse.

The win improves Dickinson to 1-37 in the last 38 meetings between the Red Devils and Diplomats in men's lacrosse as Dickinson last defeated Franklin & Marshall 12-10 in Carlisle in 1967.

Overall, F&M out shot Dickinson 44-32 in the game, including a 27-13 advantage in the first half, but the Red Devils held the advantage in ground balls (44 to 37), saves (13 to 7), face-offs (17-of-32) and extra man goals (six-for-six to one-for-five) as Dickinson scored eight goals in the fourth period to pull away from the Diplomats.

Dickinson jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the game as Ed Lawless and Brian Read tallied unassisted goals at 14:11 and 13:49, respectively, in the first period.

Franklin & Marshall scored the next two goals as Cyrus Adams (So., Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell) finished an assist from Steve Welsh (Sr., Lewes, DE/Cape Henelopen) at 10:41 and Kevin Kohl (So., Manasquan, NJ/Loomis Chaffee) netted an unassisted score at 8:44 to knot the game at 2-2.

However, Dalgliesh scored the first of his five goals off an assist from Flynn Burch at 8:18 on a man-up opportunity as the Red Devils led 3-2 after one period of play,

Dalgliesh scored again on man-up to open the second period as he finished a feed from Boyd at the 14:44 mark for a 4-2 Red Devils' lead. The Diplomats halved the margin as Henry Kusjanovic (Jr., Armonk, NY/Byram Hills) scored an unassisted goal at 12:50, but Boyd scored off a feed from Burch at 10:53 on another man-up chance to put Dickinson in front 5-3.

Franklin & Marshall then gained some momentum as Adams and Kohl scored off feeds from Welsh at 9:44 and 7:19, respectively, to tie the game at 5-5. The Diplomats continued the roll as Welsh scored off an assist from Peter Moon (Fr., Durham, NC/Durham) at 6:16 and Bobby Atkins (Fr., Concord, MA/Loomis Chaffee) netted a score off a feed from Welsh at 5:41 for a 7-5 F&M lead.

However, Dickinson tied the score at 7-7 prior to halftime as Dalgliesh netted a goal off a pass from Burch at 4:40 and Tyler Rose buried an unassisted shot at 2:19.

The teams traded goals to open the third period as Burch scored off a pass from Read at 12:12 and Atkins netted an unassisted goal at 10:42 to keep the game tied at 8-8.

Dickinson then retook the lead as Dalgliesh and Boyd scored on passes from Drew Peace and Brian Read at 4:56 and 2:41, respectively, to take a 10-8 lead.

Franklin & Marshall cut the margin to one in the closing minute of the period as Welsh whipped an unassisted goal into the net to pull the Diplomats to within 10-9 with 15 minutes to play.

However, Dickinson opened the fourth period with a flurry of scoring as Boyd scored twice, while Bernie Nolan and Dalgliesh added solo goals in the opening 2:29 of the period to put the Red Devils ahead 15-9.

F&M attempted to rally as Colin Hanley (Sr., Davidsonville, MD/DeMatha) scored off a pass from Welsh at 7:20 and Adams buried a dish from Moon at 6:04 to pull the Diplomats to within a manageable 15-11 with six minutes to play.

Dickinson tallied the next two scores as Boyd and Read netted unassisted goals for a 17-11 lead before Adams finished a pass from Atkins at 2:54 and Read tacked on an unassisted goal at :26 for the 18-12 final.

Overall, Welsh led the Diplomats with two goals and a game high five assists as he raised his career scoring total to 79-100-179 as he became the third Franklin & Marshall College men's lacrosse player to score 100 career assists joining Jon Dale '90 (218) and Bill Levy '87 (102).

In goal, Mike Sartorius (Sr., Summit, NJ/Summit) recorded four saves with 12 goals allowed in 45:34 to take the loss, while Will McIntire (Sr., Arlington, VA/Taft) allowed six goals with three saves in the final 14:26 of the contest. For Dickinson, Kevin Riley made 13 saves with 12 goals allowed to earn the win.

Franklin & Marshall (7-3, 3-2 Centennial Conference) will continue the Centennial Conference season on April 23 at Swarthmore College. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
