Adams & Wilkinsky Score Four Goals as #16 Diplomats Stop Swarthmore 11-6 in Men's Lacrosse

SWARTHMORE, PA - Cyrus Adams (So., Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell) and Noah Wilkinsky (Fr., Ardmore. PA/Valley Forge Military) both scored four goals to lead the #16 Franklin & Marshall College men's lacrosse team to a 11-6 victory in Centennial Conference action at Swarthmore College.

Historically, F&M is 35-12 all-time against Swarthmore as the victory marks the 20th straight for Franklin & Marshall over the Garnet dating back to 1984.

Franklin & Marshall took command of the game early as Kevin Kohl (So., Manasquan, NY/Loomis Chaffee) beat Swarthmore goalie Frank Mazzucco with a shot 43 seconds into the game for a 1-0 lead. The Garnet responded with 10:32 left in the first period as Ryan McKenna finished a feed from Tom Coughlin to knot the game at 1-1.

Adams and Wilkinsky finished off the first period scoring by combining for five goals and a 6-1 lead after 15 minutes of play.

Adams started the run at 9:23 as he took a pass from JB Robichau (Sr., Edgartown, MA/Tabor) and beat Mazzucco for a 2-1 lead. Twenty-five seconds later, Adams struck again burying an assist from Devin Hewitt (So., Groton, MA/Holderness) for a 3-1 lead with 8:58 left in the period.

Wilkinsky continued the roll by scoring off a pass from Kohl at 5:11 before Adams ripped an assist from Steve Welsh (Sr., Lewes, DE/Cape Henelopen) into the net for a 5-1 margin. Wilkinsky finished off the period with a score off another assist from Welsh at 2:42 for a 6-1 lead.

The Diplomats pushed the margin out to 8-1 to open the second period as Wilkinsky scored off an assist from Welsh at 12:46 and Bobby Atkins (Fr., Concord, MA/Loomis Chaffee) converted on a centering pass from Adams at 11:19.

Swarthmore sliced the margin to 8-3 as Coughlin finished a pass from Gavin Nurick at 4:18 on a man-up opportunity and Jeff Donlea scored an assist from Tim Chryssikos at 3:12 before Wilkinsky scored on another assist from Welsh with 55 seconds left in the first half for a 9-3 Franklin & Marshall lead at the break.

The Diplomats added to their lead 20 seconds into the third period as Kohl scored a man-up goal at 14:40 for a 10-3 lead.

Swarthmore cut into the margin as Coughlin scored at 11:06, McKenna tallied a man-up goal at 9:40 and Chryssikos scored with two seconds left in the third for a 10-6 F&M lead with 15 minutes to play.

However, the Franklin & Marshall defense, led by goalie Mike Sartorius (Sr., Summit, NJ/Summit), responded to shut down the Garnet before Adams scored an unassisted insurance goal with 1:34 left on the game clock for the 11-6 final.

Sartorius finished the game with a season high 18 saves between the pipes, including 12 in the second half, to record the win, while Swarthmore's Mazzucco stopped eight of the Diplomats' 28 shots in taking the loss.

The game had historical significance for Welsh as the senior attackman finished with four assists to raise his career total to 104 and surpass Bill Levy '82 (102) for second place on the career list behind Jon Dale '90 (218). For his career, Welsh has 79-104-183 as he ranks fifth in points in Franklin & Marshall College men's lacrosse history.

Franklin & Marshall (8-3, 4-2 Centennial Conference) will continue the Centennial Conference season on April 27 at home versus McDaniel College. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
