Franklin & Marshall Handles Elizabethtown 8-6 in Men's Lacrosse

BROOKLANDVILLE, MD -- Bobby Atkins (So., Concord, MA/Loomis Chaffee) scored two goals and handed out an assist as the Franklin & Marshall College men's lacrosse team handled Lancaster County rival Elizabethtown College 8-3 at St. Paul's School.

The win keeps Franklin & Marshall (2-1, 0-0 Centennial Conference) perfect against Elizabethtown (0-3, 0-0 Middle Atlantic Conference) in men's lacrosse as the Diplomats downed the Blue Jays 11-7 on February 26, 2005 in Elizabethtown in the only other meeting between the two programs.

F&M put the game away in the first half with five unanswered goals for a 5-0 lead by halftime.

Atkins opened the scoring with 9:47 left in the first period as he tallied an unassisted goal for a 1-0 lead. Peter Moon (So., Durham, NC/Durham) finished a feed from Kevin Kohl (Jr., Manasquan, NJ/Loomis Chaffee) with 5:56 left in the period to push the lead to 2-0 entering the second period.

The Diplomats tacked on three goals in the second period as Atkins tallied a man-up goal off a feed from Noah Wilkinsky (So., Ardmore, PA/Valley Forge Military Academy) at 8:07, Kohl scored on an assist from Mark Hild (Fr., Denver, CO/Denver East) at 2:39 and Phil Schellhorn (Jr., Wilton, CT/Wilton) finished a feed from Atkins with one second remaining in the half to go ahead 5-0.

Elizabethtown cut the lead to four goals to open the second half as Frankie Puzzangara scored a goal at 14:03. The Diplomats answered less than six minutes later as Brendan Kearney (So., Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) tallied an unassisted goal at 8:42, but Puzzangara responded with 3:59 left in the third period to cut Franklin & Marshall's lead to 6-2.

F&M put the game away in the first seven minutes of the fourth period as Hild ripped an assist from Kearny into the goal to go ahead 7-2 with 12:59 left on the game clock. David Steiner (Fr., Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) closed out Franklin & Marshall's scoring with an unassisted goal at the 8:35 mark before Jeff Cowan found Brad Whitcomb for a score with 5:49 on the clock.

In goal, Tim Kjeldgaard (So., Yarmouth, ME/Hyde) earned the win making 13 saves and allowing three goals on 38 shots for his second intercollegiate win, while Chris Schuch took the loss allowing eight goals and making 20 saves.

Franklin & Marshall (2-1, 0-0 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on March 15 versus Farleigh Dickinson University-Florham in Clearwater, Florida.

Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
