#10 Washington College used a 5-2 second half to outlast Franklin & Marshall College 10-6 in Centennial Conference men's lacrosse action at Roy Kirby Stadium.
Leading 5-4 at halftime despite out shooting the Diplomats 31-16 in the first half, the Shoremen pushed the margin out to 7-4 behind goals from Chris Read and Andrew Generazio at 9:24 and 8:38, respectively, in the third period. The Diplomats trimmed the margin back to a pair of goals with 2:24 remaining in the third as Colin Molloy () finished a feed from Mike Down (Jr., Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) to cut the lead to 7-5.
Washington stretched the lead to 9-5 to open the fourth quarter as Sam Lane tallied an unassisted goal at 13:29 and Read found Mike Sutter for a goal at 7:34. The teams traded goals to end the game as John Short (So., Durham, NC/Durham) scored off an assist from Phil Schellhorn (Jr., Wilton, CT/Wilton) at 6:12, but Read netted a goal off an assist from Sutter with 5:58 to play for the 10-6 final.
Overall, Washington dominated the game statistically out shooting the Diplomats 45-29, holding a 40-23 advantage in ground balls and winning 14-of-19 face-offs.
The Shoremen never trailed in the game as Anthony Hidell tallied an unassisted goal at the 11:44 mark of the first half to put Washington in front to stay. Sam Hughes scored at 5:16 to push the lead to 2-0 before Short netted an unassisted goal at 4:10 to halve the margin.
Lane scored again at 1:24 and Andrew Ostrusky followed with a goal off an assist from Lane with 21 seconds left in the quarter to give Washington a 4-1 lead. Down closed out the first quarter scoring as he beat Washington goalie Kevin Thibadeau with a shot with two seconds left in the quarter to pull F&M to within 4-2.
The Shoremen pushed the lead back to three goals in the opening minutes of the second quarter as Ryan Morrison scored at 11:22, but the Diplomats rallied to move within a goal as Chris Brandt (Sr., Armonk, NY/Byram Hills) scored a man-down goal and David Steiner (Fr., Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) finished a pass from Peter Moon (So., Durham, NC/Durham) at 2:24 for the 5-4 halftime score.
Short led the Diplomats with two goals, while Down added a goal and an assist as Franklin & Marshall fell to 1-34 all-time against Washington in men's lacrosse.
In goal, Tim Kjeldgaard (So., Yarmouth, ME/Hyde) took the loss allowing 10 goals with 18 saves, including 13 in the first half, while Thibadeau picked up the win allowing six goals with 13 saves.
Franklin & Marshall (5-5, 1-3 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on April 19 in Centennial Conference action versus Dickinson College at Sponaugle-Williamson Field. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
