Box Score ALLENTOWN, PA -- Muhlenberg College built a 5-0 lead in the first period and carried a 9-2 lead into halftime as the Mules upset Franklin & Marshall College 14-6 in Centennial Conference men's lacrosse action.
In a game postponed from April 8 due to snow and unsafe conditions at Muhlenberg (4-4, 1-2 Centennial Conference), the Mules lit up the scoreboard with five unanswered goals in the first period. Kyle Farris, Sean Toohill and Galen Marsh tallied unassisted goals at 13:29, 10:49 and 9:30, respectively, before March finished a feed from Mickey Norton at 5:44 and Norton netted an unassisted goal at 2:19 to give the Mules a 5-0 lead.
The lead grew to 8-0 to open the second period as Marsh added an unassisted goal at 11:39, Kyle Farris scored a man-up goal off an assist from Toohill at 7:18 and James Robinson netted an unassisted goal at 5:18.
Franklin & Marshall (5-4, 1-2 Centennial Conference) answered the Muhlenberg barrage with an unassisted goal by Mark Hild (Fr., Denver, CO/Denver East) at 2:33 and a goal by David Steiner (Fr., Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) off an assist from Peter Moon (So., Durham, NC/Durham) at 2:20 to trim the lead to 8-2, but Marsh tacked on his fourth goal of the first half with 1:25 remaining until halftime to give Muhlenberg a 9-2 lead at the break.
The Mules expanded the margin in the third period with goals by Robinson. Tim Martin and Toohill at 13:05, 11:31 and 4:21, respectively, to carry a 12-2 lead into the fourth period.
F&M pulled to within nine to open the frame as Hild finished a pass from Brett Leppert (Fr., Baltimore, MD/John Carroll) at 14:27, but the Mules responded less than two minutes later with a goal by Robinson off an assist from Norton at 12:38 to set the score at 13-3.
The Diplomats went on a 3-0 run from there as Hild scored unassisted at 8:03, Steiner connected with Moon for a goal at 7:32 and Bobby Atkins (So., Concord, MA/Loomis Chaffee) finished a centering pass from Mike Down (Jr., Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) with 24 seconds left to pull to within 13-6.
Muhlenberg closed out the scoring with three seconds left on the clock as Norton added an unassisted goal for the 14-6 final score.
Marsh led all scorers with four goals, while Norton added two goals and two assists; Toohill and Farris chipped in two goals and an assist and Robinson netted three goals.
For F&M, Hild scored three goals, while Steiner and Moon scored a goal and tallied an assist.
In goal, Tim Kjeldgaard (So., Yarmouth, ME/Hyde) took the loss allowing eight goals with three saves in 24:42, while Chris Marcozzi (Fr., Springfield, PA/Malvern Prep) finished the game making five saves and allowing six goals in 35:18.
Muhlenberg's Daniel Kotch earned the win making five saves and allowing four goals in 51:57, while Kevin McLewee closed out the game making three saves with two goals allowed in 8:03.
The win marks the first for Muhlenberg over Franklin & Marshall in the history of the series as it snaps a 16 game winning streak by the Diplomats over the Mules.
Franklin & Marshall (5-4, 1-2 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on April 15 in Centennial Conference action at Washington College. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.
