Diplomats Fall in Chestertown

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Freshman guard Jane O'Donnell set a school record with eight three-pointers, in just 13 attempts, and netted a career-high 30 points as Washington College downed visiting Franklin & Marshall, 66-52, on Thursday evening at the Cain Athletic Center in Centennial Conference women's basketball action. O'Donnell's 30 points also sets the record for most points in a game by a Washington College freshman.

The Diplomats (3-9, 2-4 CC) jumped out to 9-0 lead in the first 3:20 of the contest that was completed on a lay-up by sophomore forward Joanna DiPallo. The Shorewomen (7-6, 2-5 CC) went on a 13-4 run to even the game at 13-13 on a lay-up by sophomore guard Christie Rogers. The rest of the first half was back and forth and Franklin & Marshall took a 25-24 lead into intermission.

Washington College opened the second half on a 10-2 run to take a lead it would never relinquish at 34-27 with 15:03 to go. After the Diplomats cut the deficit to 36-33, O'Donnell ignited. After O'Donnell canned a triple to make it 39-33, Franklin & Marshall scored the next five points to cut it to 39-38. O'Donnell then drilled back to back threes to give the Shorewomen a 45-38 lead and gave Washington College its first double-digit lead on a trifecta with 6:00 remaining at 50-40. O'Donnell set the school record with 3:04 left in the tilt to give the Shorewomen a 60-50 edge.

Freshman forward Julie Sherwood tallied career-bests with 11 rebounds and four steals. Senior guard LaToya Turner scored 15 points in the victory for the Shorewomen. Junior guard Elise Conway and Rogers each had a team-high four assists and two blocks. The two blocks were a game-high too.

For Franklin & Marshall, junior forward Brittany Braxton recorded a double-double with a team best 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore guards Sarah Meisenberg and Amanda Miceli had 13 and 11 points respectively. Meisenberg was also tops on the squad in assists with four.

The Diplomats outrebounded the Shorewomen by a margin of 41-40. Washington College outshot Franklin & Marshall from the floor, 39% to 36%. The Shorewomen drained 10 trifectas to the Diplomats one.

The Shorewomen have now won five in a row for the first time since January 6-January 17, 1998. It is also Washington College's first victory over the Diplomats since a 55-50 victory on January 10, 1998.

Franklin & Marshall returns to action on Saturday at home against Swarthmore. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
