BALTIMORE -
The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 63-54 win over Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday night in Baltimore. Both the Blue Jays (8-6, 6-3 CC) and Franklin & Marshall (4-10, 3-5 CC) had three players score in double figures on the night.
With the score tied at 4-4 with 17:10 remaining in the first half, Hopkins got a quick three-point play from senior Julie Miller to take a 7-4 lead. Franklin & Marshall answered with a 7-2 run to take an 11-9 advantage with 14:11 to go in the first period. Highlighting that run for the Diplomats was a three pointer from Miriam Marcis and a lay-up from Brittany Braxton. Hopkins answered Franklin & Marshall's quick point spurt with a 14-4 stretch of its own. Sophomore Jonay Foster had five points for the Jays during that run while fellow sophomore Kristin Phillips had three and so did Miller. Franklin & Marshall rattled off six straight points from 6:33 to 5:43 to cut the Hopkins lead to 23-20. Sarah Meisenberg had four of the six for the Diplomats during that stretch. The Blue Jays scored 14 of the final 20 in the half to take a 35-26 lead in to the locker room.
Hopkins opened the second half with a couple of baskets as a pair of free throws from senior Whitney Davis at 16:34 gave the Blue Jays an 11-point lead at 39-28. That 11-point advantage was the largest of the game for the Blue Jays. The Diplomats then cut the lead to eight as Meisenberg sunk a lay-up and the ensuing foul shot. Hopkins countered with an Andrea Dodrill lay-up before the Diplomats used a 6-2 run to make it 43-37 in favor of Hopkins with 12:36. A pair of free throws by Joanna DiPallo at 6:39 saw Franklin & Marshall's deficit cut to four at 49-45 but that was as close as the Diplomats would get the rest of the way. Hopkins scored 14 of the final 23 points in the half to claim a 63-54 victory.
Meisenberg led all scorers with 19 points on the night, as she added four assists and five steals. Amanda Miceli and Marcis also reached double figures for the Diplomats as they had 10 points each respectively.
Davis had 16 points to tie for the team lead in that category while Dodrill posted her third double-double of the year with 16 points and 12 boards. Miller was the other Blue Jay in double figures as she contributed 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the year. Senior Haley Wojdowski tied a career-high with six assists on the night.
Franklin & Marshall returns to action on Saturday at Haverford.
