Johns Hopkins outscored Franklin & Marshall 10-1 over the final 4:14 of the game to escape with a 59-50 win over the Diplomats (6-18, 5-12 CC) in Centennial Conference women's basketball action on Saturday. Hayley Wojodowski accounted for five of the points sinking three free throws for the Jays (14-9, 12-6 CC) in the final 2:49.
The Diplomats led 49-46 with 4:32 left in the game following a pair of Amanda Micelli free throws. Julie Miller's three pointer 18 seconds later knotted the game. Wojodowski's steal and lay-up on F&M's next possession reclaimed the visitor's lead with 3:36 left in the game. Sarah Meisenberg cut the Diplomats' deficit to a single point with a free throw just inside of three minutes, but her squad was blanked the remainder of the way.
Miller snuffed the life out of F&M with her second trey of the afternoon making it 57-50 contest with 1:36 remaining.
Miller and Wojjodowski each finished the game with 10 points for Hopkins, but it was Andrea Dodrill who did the dirty work throughout the game with an 8 point, 13-rebound double-double accompanying four blocks.
Miceli and Miriam Marcis each scored 12 for the Diplomats. Meisenberg and Brittany Braxton each had nine rebounds. Meisenberg matched that total in points and had six dimes and five steals. Braxton scored eight points.
Hopkins threatened to blow the Diplomats out of the water in the first half, going on a five-minute 16-0 run that saw five different players score and three-three-pointers. The Diplomat chipped the lead down to nine points with 19 seconds in the first half, but a Kristin Phillips lay-up and free throw made it a 33-21 game going into the break.
Miceli quickly cut it back to a nine-point differential with a three pointer in the opening seconds of the second period, setting the tone for the better part of the half. F&M outscored the Blue Jays 18-8 over the next nine minutes, and captured the lead with 10:02 when Mesienberg fed Miceli for an easy lay-up under the basket.
The Blues Jays briefly recaptured the lead but Miceli and Meisenberg hooked up again with 7:27 left in the contest to make it a 47-46 F&M game. The Diplomats failed to hit another field goal the rest of the way.
The loss drops F&M's record to 6-18 (5-12 CC). Johns Hopkins improved to 14-9 (12-6 CC). The Diplomats return to action tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. against McDaniel. That game is a make-up of the twice postponed contest from earlier this week.
