BALTIMORE -
Washington & Lee's stingy defense was too much for Franklin & Marshall to solve as the Generals (3-3) knocked off the Diplomats (3-2) 10-3 in men's lacrosse on Saturday.
Rarely forced off of his line, the Generals' keeper, Chris Lalli turned away 12 F&M shots for the win. The Diplomats managed to out-shoot Washington & Lee 30-25 but it was the Generals that repeatedly generated quality scoring chances and cashed in.
Washington & Lee surged out to a 6-0 lead before F&M got on the board late in the second quarter. Having fallen behind 4-0, the Diplomats enjoyed a three-minute extra-man opportunity when the stick of Will Keigler was found to be illegal. What could have turned the tide in F&M's favor instead rallied the Generals, who killed the longest of the seven man-down situations they found themselves in. W&L killed them all.
W&L's Jim Ryan led all scorers with a hat trick, while Ned Rider had three assists for the Generals. Three different players, Mark Hild, Brian Leppert, and Sean Murphy, scored for F&M. Cyrus Adams assisted on Hild and Leppert's goals. Murphy's tally was an individual effort off of a won faceoff.
The Diplomats drop to 3-2 with the loss, while Washington & Lee evened up at 3-3. F&M will open it's Centennial slate on Wednesday in Lancaster when the Diplomats host McDaniel.
