Frank Mazzucco turned aside 13 shots to deliver Swarthmore an 8-6 win over Franklin & Marshall at Sponaugle-Williamson Field Wednesday afternoon. The visiting Garnet had three different players score a pair of goals, including Tyler Bradshaw, who tallied the game-winnner with 1.7 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Diplomats tied the game at 6-6 with 16 ticks in the third when Mark Hild (Denver, CO / Denver East) scored on a diving effort from the left side of the crease. The ensuing face-off remained loose until Drew Bonessa finally flipped the ball to Richard Jaronczyk, who found the waiting stick of Bradshaw. His shot in the top corner of the net restored Swarthmore's lead for good heading into the final quarter.
F&M's starting keeper, Dan Coffman (Annaplois / Severn School) was lifted following Bradshaw's tallyt He went to the bench with seven goals allowed against four saves. Matt Duca (West Islip, NY / St. John's) worked the fourth quarter for the Diplomats turning away one shot, and allowing Gavin Nurick's second goal of the game. His insurance marker came with 5:24 left in play. Kyle Wilson also scored a pair for Swarthmore on the day.
In addition to his goal, Hild recorded three assists in the contest. Cyrus Adams (Nashville, TN) and Brendan Kearny (Alexandria, VA / Bishop Ireton) each recorded two goals for F&M.
The game was played as closely as the score indicates, with he Diplomats holding a slight edge in shots, 25-22. Both teams recorded 26 ground balls, while Swarthmore held a 10-6 advantage in face-offs.
Franklin & Marshall fell to 3-4 (0-2 CC) with the loss, while Swarthmore improved to 3-2 (2-1 CC). The Diplomats return to action on Saturday for another Centennial showdown. F&M will face Dickinson in Carlisle at noon.
