Diplomats Handle Haverford

LANCASTER, Pa. - Miriam Marcis and Alison Menna recorded season highs of 14 and 13 points, respectively, to lead Franklin & Marshall over Haverford 78-35 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Thursday.

The win marked the Diplomats (10-4, 5-2 CC) largest margin of victory of the season and the first time they have held an opponent under 40 points, allowing just 22 points by the Fords (3-10, 0-7 CC) in the second half.

Nine different players scored for Haverford, led by Erica Juliano with eight points.

F&M raced out to a 36-13 lead at intermission and returned in the second half to shoot 51.9 percent from the floor to collect its second straight win over the Fords this season.

The Diplomats opened the game with a commanding 20-4 run in the first eight minutes, 37 seconds. Marcis started the scoring with a layup and Beth Holt knocked in two three-pointers for an 8-2 lead.

Cara Landolfi and Sarah Meisenberg exchanged layups, before Marcis connected on two consecutive jumpers to make it 14-4.

F&M kept setting the pace and pushed the lead to 20 points after Brittany Braxton completed the three-point play at 31-11 with 5:31 remaining.

The Diplomats never backed down offensively in the second half, outscoring the Fords 42-22 while continuing to clamp down on defense.

Sara Wolman dished out a career-high seven assists to go along with five points and three steals. Jess Bishop had a career night with six boards, five assists and three steals.

Freshman Barrett Boychuck tallied her first collegiate points, draining a three-pointer in the second half.

F&M returns to action on Saturday against Muhlenberg. Game time is 2 p.m.
