EAST LANSING, Mich. – Nico Somers placed fourth in the
285-pound open bracket to lead Franklin & Marshall's
effort at the Michigan State Open on Sunday. His afternoon marks
the first time the 2006-2007 season that Somers placed in a
tournament. He won the Wilkes Open and placed fifth at the Mat Town
Open that season.
In the championship bracket, Somers placed a 3-2 decision on
Virginia's Jack Danilkoicz before falling 4-1 to second-place
finisher, Nate Everhart of Indiana. Somers proceeded to hand out
decisions in the wrestle-back, includinga 5-2 win over
Northwestern's Ben Kuhar and a 3-2 win over Michigan
State's Alan O'Donnell. A win by injury default
propelled Somers into the consolation finals where he dropped a 3-2
decision to Michigan's Chad Bleske.
Starting his day off with a pin, Justin Herbert wrestled his way
to the consolation quarterfinals. His 24th career pin moved
F&M's senior within six pins of the College's
career mark.
Wrestling in the 174-pound open bracket, Herbert pinned
Pittsburgh's Karl DeCiantis late in the first period, and
then defeated Eastern Michigan's Tommy St. Louis with a 10-4
decision to work into the quarterfinals on the championship
bracket. Penn State's David Erwin bumped Herbert to the
consolation bracket with an 8-3 decision before
Northwestern's Brian Roddy ended The F&M senior's
day with an 8-4 setback. Roddy went on to take sixth place.
Anthony Bongarzone went 2-2 in the 165-pound, freshman/sophomore
bracket. Wrestling up a weight from last year, Bongarzone
dropped a 10-7 decision to Buffalo's Matt Bogardus in the
first round. He battled back with an 11-9 decision of
Muskegon's Patrick Mehan before grabbing his first pin
of the season at the expense of Anchor Bay's Nick Licari.
Indiana's Cooper Samuels, who finished in fourth place, ended
Bongarzone's day, squeaking out a 6-5 decision.
Competing in the freshman/sophomore, 157-pound bracket, first-year
grappler, James DiNicola, wrestled into the quarterfinals on the
strength of a bye and an 11-1 major of Oakland University's
Scott Kauffman.
Colin Ely won a pair of matches in the 184-pound
freshman/sophomore bracket, while Dan Canfield won his first match
of the year in the same group.
Ohio's Dylan Wrage, bounced Ely from the championship
bracket in his first collegiate match, but he bounced back with a
3-1 win over Muskegon's Corey Moore. Purdue's Marx
Success was a failure against the F&M frosh, falling at 2:29 in
the first period, but Northwestern's Aaron Jone ended
Ely's run with an 11-4 major.
Canfield's win in the consolation bracket was a 3-1 decision
over Olivet's Aaron Sullinger.
The Diplomats return to action on next week at Army for the
Diplomats' Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association
opener.
