LANCASTER, Pa. -
Franklin & Marshall's women's basketball team provided itself with a two-game cushion in the hunt for the Centennial Conference (CC) playoffs, beating Ursinus 59-46 at the Mayser Center Wednesday evening. With the season split, the Diplomats (16-6, 11-4 CC) hold two games on the Bears (11-11, 9-6 CC), and one game on Gettysburg for third place in the league. F&M still trails Muhlenberg for second place by a single game with three games left on the Dips' docket.
Sarah Meisenberg led all scorers with 20 points, marking the 11th time the Diplomats' junior has made a foray into 20-point territory this season. It was also the 14th occasion on which she has led the team in points this season.
Strong second-half shooting sparked the victory. The Diplomats were an icy 29.6 percent in the first half, and were one-of-five from three-point range in the first period, which ended with a 24-24 deadlock. The second half was a different story. F&M clicked on 44.4 percent of its field goals in the second period, including a five-of-six effort from beyond the arc.
A pair of those threes came from the hands of Sara Wolman. Wolman hit treys on back-to-back possessions to break open what had been a 32-30 F&M lead. Wolman's quick six sparked a 13-2 run which took the game out of question midway through the second half. Wolman accounted for eight of the points in the run, she finished the game with 11 points, making her one of four Diplomats to finish in double figures. Brittany Braxton and Cara Landolfi scored 10 and 11 points, respectively.
Braxton led all rebounders with 12 boards. Landolfi gathered nine caroms.
Ursinus got 11 points from Sarah Hennessey, while Julie Brown pulled down nine rebounds for the Bears.
The Diplomats return to action on Saturday at Bryn Mawr.
