LANCASTER, Pa. - Julie Bown led four players in double figures
for a game-high 13 points to help Ursinus get a 58-53 comeback
victory over Franklin & Marshall in Centennial Conference (CC)
women's basketball action on Tuesday night.
The Bears (3-7, 2-4 CC) went on a 28-11 run in the second half
to erase a 12-point deficit, including a 9-2 spurt in the final
5:04 of the game to collect their third win of the season and
second straight over the Diplomats (5-7, 3-3 CC).
Carolyn Konstanzer, Jaclyn Hilf and Kristy George each finished
with 10 points. Konstanzer recorded all of her points in the second
half to aid in the comeback.
Amanda Miceli and Beth Holt paced F&M with 13 points apiece,
knocking down three triples each. Sarah Meisenberg became the
program's all-time leader in free-throws made with 336, going
2-for-2 to surpass Cathy Belser's mark of 335.
With the Diplomats ahead 42-30 at the 15:04 mark, the Bears
scored 13 straight points to take their first lead of the half at
43-42 on a Laura Krieger pull-up jumper from the free-throw line.
Bown hit a jumper and Miceli answered with her third triple make
it 47-all. Casey Downie registered back-to-back baskets for F&M
to take a 51-49 lead with 5:04 remaining. Ursinus relied on two
offensive rebounds to set up Hilf's three-pointer to give Ursinus
the lead for good.
Bown followed with another jumper and Konstanzer got two points
on a layup to make it 56-51 with 2:33 showing on the clock. Holt
finished a fast-break layup off a Megan Pauley steal for a
three-point game, but the Diplomats could not get the equalizer on
three attempts from behind the arc and George nailed two from the
charity stripe with seven seconds left to seal the victory.
F&M used an 8-0 run late in the first half to get out in
front of the Bears. With the scored tied at 22-all, Meisenberg made
a pair of free-throws followed by a Miceli layup and a Holt
three-pointer for a 29-22 lead. The Diplomats kept Ursinus off the
board for four minutes, 35 seconds and George made both from the
line to end the second half for a 30-24 F&M lead.
The Diplomats raced out to their largest lead at 42-30 in the
first five minutes of the second stanza, but the Bears began to
make their move with the second-half run that resulted in the
eventual win.
Downie ended with a season-high 13 points on 6-for-8 shooting,
eight rebounds and two blocks.
F&M returns to action on Thursday at Haverford. Game time is
6 p.m.
