SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Sarah Meisenberg recorded her first
double-double of the season with a game-high 22 points and
career-best 13 rebounds, while Cara Landolfi contributed 14 points
to lead Franklin & Marshall past Swarthmore 61-55 in Centennial
Conference (CC) women's basketball on Saturday.
Meisenberg and Landolfi combined for 19 of the 29 second-half
points to help the Diplomats (10-8, 7-4 CC) post their third
straight sweep and seventh straight win over the Garnet (10-9, 7-5
CC).
Kathryn Stockbower led Swarthmore with 15 points and a game-high
14 rebounds.
F&M held the Garnet to 29.9 percent shooting and hit key
shots in the final three minutes of the game for the fourth
consecutive conference victory.
Swarthmore used a 15-4 run to start the second half, taking a
nine-point lead at the 12:55 mark. Meisenberg scored six points and
Landolfi added four, while Megan Pauley gave F&M its first lead
with a layup to make it 52-51 with 4:12 to play.
Summer Miller-Walfish hit two shots from the line to give
Swarthmore a one-point edge, but Meisenberg made a free throw and
on the next two possessions connected on a layups to put the
Diplomats on top for good.
Melissa Grigsby hit a jumper to get the Garnet within two at
57-55 with 1:20 showing on the clock. Meisenberg found Landolfi
under the basket for two and Beth Holt sealed the win with two free
throws with 25 seconds left. Swarthmore missed all three attempts
from the field in the final minute of the game.
The Diplomats went on an 11-2 run in the final 2:10 of the first
half, to erase a seven-point deficit to take a two-point lead at
intermission. Allison Bauer began the spurt with a layup and
Meisenberg scored the remaining nine straight points to give the
visitors a small cushion heading into the second half.
The Garnet held a steady lead throughout the first half until
the late run and Meisenberg's free throws that put F&M ahead
for the first time since the opening minute of the game.
The Diplomats return to action on Tuesday against McDaniel. Game
time is 7 p.m.
