BALTIMORE, Md. – Franklin & Marshall made the most of
its opportunities in a 2-1 win over No. 13 Johns Hopkins Saturday
in a Centennial Conference (CC) contest. The Diplomats (6-3-3,
2-1-3 CC) capitalized on just three shots on offense and forced the
Blue Jays (10-3-3, 3-2-2 CC) to shoot errant shots on defense.
The win, coupled with Muhlenberg's 1-0 win over Haverford and
Gettysburg and 2-2 draw with Dickinson, leaped the Diplomats from
seventh to third in the conference standings with two games to
play. It also gave the F&M seniors a 2-0-2 record against
Hopkins. The win also marks the first time since 1993 that F&M
has defeated Hopkins in Baltimore.
After a scoreless first half the Diplomats took a 1-0 lead when Ben Beaver
found the back of the net from 10 yards out in the 49th minute.
F&M tacked on the eventual game winner 10 minutes later when Eric
Elicker bent a free kick to the far right post.
The Blue Jays got on the board at the 84-minute mark with a Scott
Bukoski's header.
F&M keeper Zack Zamek, the reigning ECAC Division III South
Defensive Player of the Week and CC Defensive Player of the Week,
stopped nine shots in goal to pick up the win. Charlie Welch
combined with Zamek have led an F&M defense that has only given
up one goal in the last four contests. Welch had two end line
clears in the win.
The Diplomats close of their regular season this week when they
host Ursinus Tuesday at 7 p.m. and Friday when Dickinson visits
Tylus Field at 7:30 p.m.
