ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Franklin & Marshall's Jake Bucha
took the 133-pound gold medal at the Navy Classic on Saturday. The
senior used a pin, a major decision and another pair of decisions
to become the Diplomats' first tournament winner since Nico Somers
won heavyweight at the 2006 Wilkes Open.
Bucha pinned West Virgnia's Tony Chicuto in 4:54 for the
50th win and of his career. He is the 24th
Diplomat to reach that plateau. Bucha proceeded to knock off three
EIWA opponents starting with a 14-3 win over Bucknell's Derrik
Russell. He edged Navy's Ben Levin in the semifinals 3-1 before
handling Bucknell's Alex Pelliccotti 8-4 for the medal.
The gold medal marked the third time Bucha has placed at the
Navy Classic. In 2007 he placed sixth at 125. Last year he was
fourth at 133. Saturday's first place finish is the first
tournament win of his career. He is 6-0 on the season.
Bucha was one of five Diplomats to secure at least a victory on
the afternoon. He accounted for the bulk of F&M's 19.5 points.
The Diplomats finished sixth out of the seven teams at the
tournament. Navy took their own event for the 18th time
in 33 years.
Kenny
Knapp (1-3) knocked off Bloomsburg's Nick Wilcox 13-5 in the
first round of the 133 bracket, but was edged out of the main draw
by Navy's Tyler Sackett 8-6 before being eliminated by another
Middie, Justis Flamio.
Aaron Velasquez (1-2) recorded his first
collegiate win in his first action of the year, knocking
off Campbell's Sam Parrish in the consolation
draw. Velasquez owned a 4-2 lead and had
Parrish on his back when the match was stopped as a medical
forfeit. He fell 6-0 in his opening match against second-seeded Joe
Locksmith from Navy. Another Middie, Aaron Willis, ended his
day.
At 174 pounds, Matt
Fullowan (2-3) fell 4-1 in the first round to Navy's Oscar
Huntley. He picked up a win in the wrestle back with a 3-2 win over
Campbell's Peter Comis before WVU's Brandon Litner ended his day
6-2
At heavyweight, Dan
Canfield (2-3) knocked off George Mason's Hunter Manspile 5-2,
but a pair of back-to-back 3-1 losses ended his day. The first was
a sudden victory for Campbell's Parker Burns
