ROANOKE, Va. -- Three games into its season, Roanoke had
outscored their opponents 74-14. After four quarters in what was
Franklin & Marshall's season opener, the Maroons' margin
increased to 93-24 on the strength of a 19-10 victory.
The Diplomats (0-1) were hanging around near the end of the
first quarter in a 3-3 contest. A Stephen Furdock goal with1:44
remaining gave the Maroons (4-0) a 4-3 edge, and sparked a
nine-goal run on the F&M cage that encompassed the entire
second quarter.
Three of the goals scored by Roanoke in the stretch came on the
extra-man. The
Maroons cashed in on four of the Diplomats' seven penalties in the
game. F&M scored on two of Roanoke's three penalties in the
first quarter before the Maroons knuckled down. The Diplomats did
not get another chance with the extra-man until the fourth quarter.
F&M's first extra-man goal came from the stick of freshman,
Tristan Miller. Miller finished the game with four goals. Colin
McKew, who finished the game with three assists, set up Miller's
first collegiate marker.
It was McKew that finally halted the decisive Roanoke run with
back-to-back goals, both assisted by Justin Rayman, to start the
second half. He also assisted three goals in the contest for a
five-point afternoon.
Roanoke's Matt Quinton led all scorers with five goals. He
reeled off three-straight down the stretch of the second quarter to
take his team into the locker room with a 12-3 lead.
The Diplomats saw their early momentum in the third spiked by
another Roanoke extra-man goal, making it 13-5. The Maroons
followed on with another pair to close out the quarter.
Kevin Kilpatrick setup Miller 1:25 into the fourth, before he
scoring on a feed from McKew 1:25 later to make it 15-7. That was
as close as the Diplomats got in the second half.
Roanoke fired 48 shots to the Diplomats' 27. Today's game marks
the first time the Maroons have been held under 20 goals in a game.
F&M's keepers, Chris Marcozzi and Ben Feldberg combined for
nine saves.
The Diplomats are idle until next Saturday when F&M opens
the home slate with St. Mary's (Md.) College.
