Diplomats Stun No. 8 Generals

Box Score

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – Driving rain and high winds were not enough to prevent Franklin & Marshall's Tristan Miller from making his appointed rounds. The Diplomats' (1-2) freshman scored four times to lead F&M to its first victory of the season, a 7-5 upset of No. 8 Washington & Lee. The win was the Diplomats' first of the season, and doubled as the Generals' (6-1) first setback.

Miller gave the Diplomats the early jump with a pair of goals in the game's first five minutes. Colin McKew sent a pass from behind to Miller on the goalmouth two-and-a-half in. 1:45 later, Miller flashed fast leather on a feed from Jeff Ritter to make it 2-0. Sean Kenny continued the Diplomat freshman run on the cage to make it 3-0 before the Generals answered.

W&L's Kevin Feeney rifled a bounce shot through the wickets of Chris Marcozzi, for the Generals' lone goal of the first half. Marcozzi stopped four shots through the first two quarters and finished the game with 11 saves, including four in the final period.

Entering the last quarter, F&M owned a 7-4 lead with Miller tallies serving as bookends around a three-goal third quarter run by W&L that made things interesting down the stretch. Miller popped in the first game-winning goal of his career early in the third quarter. While it stood up, it looked like the Generals were set to rally with a quick spate of goals in a three-minute stretch.

Max Mancuso broke a 30:36 W&L scoring drought midway through the third. W&L then took advantage of an F&M penalty when Will Kleiger sent a pass top left to Logan Bartlett, who punched home from six yards out into the top right corner. Brown moseyed around the crease and rolled a shot just inside of the right post to make it 6-4, 52 seconds later.

Miller and McKew conspired again to stop the run, but it was McKew who gave the Generals another shot a life. Early in the fourth quarter, McKew tangled up with a Washington & Lee player allowing the Generals to cash in on the EMO for the second time, but Marcozzi and his Diplomat defense went into lockdown from that point forward.

With F&M holding a tenuous two-goal lead, Sean Oliver raced to the W&L cage and fired a shot wide. The Generals recovered the loose ball, but Mason and Oliver collided. As Oliver started to work back up field, Mason tangled with the Diplomat and was sent off for an unsportsmanlike conduct call that ultimately sealed the Generals' fate. Marcozzi did the rest with two saves down the stretch.

W&L was its own worst enemy in the games early going. The Generals failed on four clear attempts, mostly on unforced errors. That left play in front of the W&L cage for the bulk of the quarter. Miller's early work proved insurmountable in the wire-to-wire win.

The win was the second over a top ten team for Diplomats' third-year mentor, Todd Cavallaro. W&L still owns the series at 13-10, but F&M is 7-2 in the nine meetings played in Lancaster. F&M is idle until Wednesday when the Diplomats travel to Susquehanna.
