SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Kevin Kilpatrick scored three goals and
assisted on another to lead Franklin & Marshall to a 9-7 win
over Swarthmore on Wednesday. The win was the first in Centennial
Conference (CC) play for the Diplomats (3-3, 1-1 CC), while the
Garnet (1-5, 0-3 CC) remain winless in the league.
Kilpatrick punched in the game-winner early in the fourth
quarter, beating Kevin Friedenberg inside of the right post to put
F&M ahead 8-5. Kilpatrick gave the Diplomats their first lead
of the game late in the second quarter on a feed from Colin McKew.
McKew punched in on his own with 30 seconds left in the first half
to give the Diplomats a 5-3 lead going into the break. McKew
finished the game with two goals and assist.
Swarthmore rallied back on the other side of the half with Tyler
Bradshaw scoring a pair of unassisted goals. He scored four goals
and assisted on another. After Bradshaw knotted things up,
Kilpatrick went back to work, sparking the decisive three-goal run.
Kilpatrick accounted for the first and third in the run, with James
Wenk scoring in between. Wenk's goal, the first of two on the day,
whipped a rising shot into the top right corner to convert on one
of F&M's four extra-man opportunities on the day.
Andrew Setian gave the Diplomats a decisive edge in possessions,
winning 14 of 17 faceoffs in the contest. It marks the second game
in a row that Setian has been in double figures in faceoff
wins.
"Andrew was fantastic on the faceoffs today," said Head Coach,
Todd Cavallaro. "His work in gaining possession was the difference
in today's game."
Setian was the difference because the Diplomats were facing one
of the nation's top keepers. Friedenberg turned away 15 F&M
advances, three fewer than his career high. The Diplomats outshot
Swarthmore 30-25 and held a 33-17 lead in ground balls.
The Diplomats return to action on Saturday against
Dickinson.
