LANCASTER, Pa. – A four-goal Dickinson run in the first
half doomed the Diplomats as the No. 8 Red Devils toppled Franklin
& Marshall 8-5 in Centennial Conference (CC) play on
Saturday.
Dickinson's Sam Greenburg did the bulk of the Red Devils (9-1,
2-1 CC) damage on the run and in the game. The first pair of his
four came six seconds apart in the middle of the decisive four-goal
spurt. Greenburg's first came early in the second period when
Dickinson's pole, John Haire, carried the clear and fed the cutting
Devils' junior on the right hand side to slip one by the Diplomats'
(3-4, 1-2 CC) Chris Marcozzi at 12:40. Chip Murray won the ensuing
faceoff, flipped a quick pass to Chris Dodson who forwarded it to
Greenburg for the goal at 12:34 to make it a 4-1 game in favor of
Dickinson.
Greenburg would have earned a natural hat trick had it not been
for Marcozzi. The Diplomats' senior backstop made what may be one
of the best sprawling saves of the season. A turnover gave the
Devils a two-on-one. Greenburg collected a perfect pass on the top
of the crease and went high on the Diplomats' keeper as he was
diving forward. What looked like a certain goal, was stopped by a
quick-rising crosse, keeping the Diplomats within three.
Greenburg eventually got his hat trick with his first goal of
the second half, 1:08 into the period. His quick-stick finish on
Oliver Thompson's feed stood up as the game winner. He added an
important insurance goal with two Diplomats in the penalty box to
make it a 7-5 game. It was the only goal in the ten extra-man
opportunities in the contest.
The goal was necessary because of an F&M second-half run
that followed Greenburg's third. Kevin Kilpatrick popped in a pair
around a James Wenk goal to cut the game to 6-5. Kilpatrick's
first came on a delayed penalty call, taking a pass from Justin
Rayman and whipping a low angle shot from the right just under the
crossbar to make it 6-3. Three minutes later, Wenk collected a Sean
Oliver pass, rolled off of his defender and fired high from eight
yards out to make it 6-4. Oliver set up Kilpatrick five minutes
later to get F&M back within one.
The Diplomats' run coincided with the game becoming a chippy
affair. Seven of the game's 11 penalties came after Kilpatrick's
second that had made it a one goal game. The penalties became the
Diplomats' undoing. A pair of Fummers were sitting in the box
for illegal body checks when Greenburg made it a two-goal game only
two minutes after Kilpatrick had given F&M a fighting chance.
Dickinson's Tyler Magann held the Diplomats off the board the rest
of the way, while Ted Sirvaitis cleaned up a ground ball on the
crease and beat Marcozzi up top to make it the 8-5 final with 6:57
to play.
Both Magann and Marcozzi made 11 saves in the game. F&M
outshot Dickinson 32-29 in the contest, but half of F&M's shots
sailed wide, high or never made it to the cage. The Diplomats did
get a pair of goals from Shane Brennan, who has given the offense a
boost since returning last Saturday. He rolled off of the crease
and beat Magann up high for the Diplomats' first. He fired a
turnaround blast from 12-yards out late in the half to make it 5-2
going into the break.
The Diplomats return to action Wednesday night at Scranton.
