SCRANTON, Pa.—Franklin & Marshall opened a 5-3
halftime lead, then held The University of Scranton scoreless in
the third period en route to a 9-6 victory Wednesday evening at
Fitzpatrick Field.
Sophomore attacker Kevin Kilpatrick scored a game-high four
goals, including two in each half, and sophomore midfielder James
Wenk finished with two goals and an assist as the Diplomats
improved to 4-4.
Franklin & Marshall, which held a 41-35 advantage in ground
balls and won 9-of-17 face-offs, received a goal and an assist from
senior midfielder Shane Brennan. The Diplomats got a goal apiece
from senior Sean Murphy and sophomore midfielder Keith Murray.
Scranton, which suffered its sixth straight loss to fall to 2-8,
was led by freshman attacker Oliver Nugent with two goals. Junior
attacker Sean Coleman chipped in a goal and an assist.
For the second straight game, the Royals were within striking
distance by intermission but failed to score a goal in the third
period.
Kilpatrick came up with two keys plays during a 35-second span
early in the third period. He intercepted a pass deep in Royal
territory and converted a one-on-one situation against Scranton
junior goalie Jeremy Dowiak into a goal. On the play, he also drew
a one-minute unnecessary roughness penalty by Royal freshman
defender Brendan Synan, which the Diplomats converted into a man-up
goal by Murray off of a play set up by Wenk.
Scranton finally broke a 27-minute scoring draught early in the
fourth period when sophomore Daniel Slade drilled a shot past
Diplomat senior goalie Chris Marcozzi off of a crisp pass from
junior midfielder Keenan Dowd to cut the lead to 7-4.
The teams traded two goals apiece in the final four minutes to
set the final score.
Dowd finished with a game-high four assists for Scranton, which,
once again, struggled in its extra-man offense, converting just 1
of 7 attempts. The Diplomats also struggled in their extra-man
opportunities, cashing in on just one of six tries.
The Royals erased an early 1-0 deficit behind back-to-back goals
by freshman Taylor Nelson and Nugent before the Diplomats scored
four straight goals during an eight-minute span that stretch into
the second period to take the lead for good. Royal senior
midfielder Doug Homan broke through a couple of Diplomat defenders
with nine minutes before intermission to cut the gap to two,
5-3.
Marcozzi finished with a game-high 12 saves and F&M caused
16 of Scranton's 23 turnovers. Dowiak was credited with eight saves
for Scranton, which also received a solid defensive effort from
juniors Stephen Bruestle and Andrew Eastwood, both of whom combined
for six caused turnovers.
The Diplomats return to action on Saturday against
Muhlenberg.
