LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall overcame a
three-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime, but
Haverford's Travis Gregory ended the game 1:38 into the extra
period, allowing the Fords to sneak away with an 8-7 win.
The Diplomats trailed 6-3 heading into the final quarter. That's
when Shane Brennan and James Wenk went to work. Brennan scored on a
solo effort 47 seconds into the fourth quarter to make it a 6-4
game. Zack Cohen answered for Haverford three minutes later, but
Fords' penalties opened the door for F&M.
James Wenk cashed in on a pair of extra-man opportunities in the
fourth quarter. The first was set up by Colin McKew, while Keith
Murray assisted the second. Murray's assist marks three consecutive
games in which he has gotten in on the action on the extra-man.
F&M scored a season-high three extra-man goals in their five
opportunities on the day.
1:04 after Wenk struck for the second time, Brennan got his
second on a Rayman feed, knotting the game at 7-7 and forcing
overtime.
The game was a tale of two halves, with the defenses winning the
battles in the first half. The Fords struck twice in the second
quarter after 20 minutes of scoreless lacrosse. That was all of the
offense in the first 30 minutes. 13 of the game's 15 goals were
scored in the second half.
Joe Banno made a dozen saves in the Haverford net while Chris
Marcozzi made five stops for F&M. Andrew Setian continued his
faceoff dominance in the Centennial, finishing with 15 wins. He has
posted double-digits in the faceoffs won column in each of
F&M's five conference affairs this season. F&M also owned
the ground balls with 26 to the Fords 18.
The Diplomats return to action on Wednesday in the second of
three consecutive road games. F&M will face McDaniel at 4:00
p.m.
