CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Three late goals by three different
players snatched victory from the jaws of defeat for Washington
College as the Shoremen stole an 8-7 win from Franklin &
Marshall Saturday night. The loss was marks the second time in as
many trips to Chestertown where the Shoremen rallied from a
two-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to secure the win. It was
also the fifth time in the last six meetings the game was decided
by a single goal.
Trailing 7-5 late in the fourth quarter, Brad Ruzicka took
advantage of a Yazin Elrabie holding penalty to get Washington
(4-8, 2-6 CC) back within one, 7-6, with 3:42 remaining. Less than
a minute later, Shane Kaski scored his second to knot the game at
7-all with 2:53 left, at the same time Ian Lowe went to the box for
a slash. The Shoremen needed only 17 seconds to cash in for the
second time on five extra man opportunities on the night. Tom Rixey
netted what stood up as the game-winner.
The Diplomats (5-7, 2-5 CC) found themselves in an early hole,
falling behind the hosts 3-0 in the first quarter, but Kevin
Kilpatrick got F&M on the board with 3:50 left in the first
quarter to spark a three-goal run. Colin McKew fed Shane Brennan
and Tristan Miller 47 seconds apart in the early going of the
second quarter to draw the teams even at 3-all.
Kilpatrick finished the game with a hat trick. His final tally
of the night came at the horn of the third quarter, giving F&M
a 6-5 lead going into the final period. Brennan's second of the
night made it 7-5 before the Shoremen rallied.
F&M's final shot to tie the game came from Brennan with 26
seconds to go, but it went wide and was backed up by WC freshman
goalkeeper Matt Miller. The Shoremen turned the ball over with 11
seconds left, but F&M was unable to clear the ball and
Washington held on for the win. Miller made 17 saves in goal for
the Shoremen and shared game-high honors in ground balls with Rixey
with seven. Marcozzi made 11 saves for F&M.
The game was F&M's fourth-straight, and fifth this season,
decided by a single goal. The Diplomats out-shot their hosts 41-36,
led the draws 11-6, and the ground balls 36-31. Despite the effort,
the Diplomats remain winless in Chestertown.
F&M returns to action next Saturday night. The Diplomats
will close out the 2010 campaign against Gettysburg. Opening
faceoff is set for 7:00 pm.
