LANCASTER, Pa. – Messiah College scored two runs in the
11th inning to defeat Franklin & Marshall 6-5 in a
non-conference baseball game Thursday afternoon. The Diplomats fell
to 12-18-1 and the Falcons improved to 15-15.
With the scored tied at four and one out of the board, Jon
Shenk hit a double to right field to get things going for Messiah
in the top of the 11th. The Falcons were issued walks in
the next two at-bats, loading the bases. Wes Hollenbach hit a
sacrifice fly to leftfield, plating Shenk for a 5-4 advantage.
Messiah added another run on a passed ball to take a 6-4
lead.
Aaron Gillette doubled down the leftfield line to start the
bottom of the 11
th. Gillette advanced to third on
J.T. Triantos ground out and
Matt Will brought Gillette home with a
ground out to the shortstop for a 6-5 score.
Bill Murray popped up
to the first basemen to end the game.
F&M got on board first with a run in the second frame. Jay
Anderson led off with a double and moved to third on a
Nick Rolnick
fly to centerfield.
Andrew Conlan plated Anderson with a
single in the next plate appearance for a 1-0 score.
Messiah answered with a run in the third and the Diplomats
countered with two in fourth. Triantos hit a double to right
center, scoring Gillette and Rolnick for a 3-1 F&M
advantage.
The Falcons scored a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to
retake the lead at 5-4. F&M tied the game in the bottom of the
ninth to send the game into extra innings. Murray's ground
out scored Gillette for the run.
Gillette scored three runs on a 1-for-3 night and Triantos
finished with two RBIs.
Brendan DeMond was saddled with loss. DeMond worked five
innings, allowing two runs. He struck out four and induced six
groundouts.
Elliot Thomas took the win. Thomas pitched 1.2 innings and
gave up a run.
Franklin & Marshall returns action tomorrow when the
Diplomats travel to York for a 4 p.m. ballgame.
