Roanoke Outruns F&M

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – Fifth-ranked Roanoke scored four goals in the opening 1:56 en route to a 19-13 win at Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. Richard Lachlan accounted for three goals in the opening salvo. He assisted on four more, one in each quarter, before the day was out.

After a midfield takeaway, Lachlan parked on the left post and waited for a series of passes to make their way to his crosse. A double-clutch of the stick exposed the long side and made it 2-0. Lachlan struck again five seconds later from the opposite side, firing in the upper right corner off of a faceoff breakaway.  His final goal came 1:11 later, back on the left post where he collected a feed from Trey Keeley up top and rifled it inside of the left iron. His final tally of the day made it 4-0.

After enduring the initial haymaker, Franklin & Marshall wobbled to its feet when freshman A.J. Reichart shoveled a loose ball into the Maroons' cage at 11:35. Five minutes later, Lachlan continued to rain on the Diplomats' parade, feeding Noah Gibby for the first of his pair. That started a three-goal run that looked as if it was going to leave F&M dead in the water trailing 7-1, but the Diplomats fought their way back in.

F&M scored twice in the final 90 seconds of the first to make it 7-3. Tristan Miller popped home the first of his four on the day on an assist from Billy Kempner. Moments later, Jason Polansky netted his first collegiate goal. Colin McKew came up with a pair of assists on consecutive F&M goals in the second quarter, setting up Jimmy Wenk and Kempner. As they did each time F&M started a run, Roanoke answered with a pair to make it 10-5 at the break.

Kempner was instrumental in getting the Diplomats back into the game. He finished the game with four goals and an assist, as did Miller. McKew had a goal and a career-high six assists on the afternoon. His first helper of the day was the 50th of his career. Kempner and Miller each scored a pair early in the third to get F&M within four, with 10 minutes left in the third. That was as close as the Diplomats got the rest of the way.

Gibby then struck again with the help of the hometown player, Keeley. Keeley scored again 50 seconds later on the extra-man and it was all Roanoke from there. Keeley finished the game with three goals and three assists. The Maroons' faceoff specialist, Justin Tuma, scored four goals and assisted on one more. He won 16 of 28 faceoffs on the day, a number of which resulted in quick Roanoke goals. Andrew Setain won 13 of the 28 faceoffs he took.

F&M's starting attack accounted for nine goals and eight assists, the most productive day for Todd Cavallaro's attack since assuming the helm of the Diplomats' program.  The 13 goals marked the second best offensive day for F&M of his tenure. The Diplomats scored 15 against Lycoming in his second game at F&M.

The Maroons jumped to 2-0 on the season. F&M fell to 1-1. The Diplomats return to action on Wednesday at Gwynedd-Mercy.
