Diplomats Sneak Past Generals

Box Score

MANHASSET, N.Y. – Franklin & Marshall outscored Washington & Lee 4-1 in the fourth quarter to squeak out a 7-6 win over Washington & Lee at Manhasset High School Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats (3-1) win marked the second in as many meetings with the Generals (2-4) and was the fourth consecutive game between the schools decided by two goals or less.

W&L owned a 5-3 lead heading into the final quarter, but F&M scored four-straight in a span of 7:31. In the second minute of the final quarter, Tristan Miller collected a high feed from Colin McKew on the goalmouth. His turnaround blast went off of the chest of W&L's Jason Lumpkin and snuck in under the crossbar. F&M's lone extra-man goal of the game ended a 22:35 scoring drought imposed by the Generals defense and a handful of outstanding saves by Lumpkin. He stopped 11 in the game.

A minute and 16 seconds after the Miller goal, Manhasset native Matt Gillan bounced a shot over Lumpkin from the right hand side to knot the game at 5-5. The score remained that way for the next four-and-a-half minutes, until Billy Kempner finished a Kevin Kilpatrick pass to give F&M its first lead of the day. The Diplomats took the ensuing faceoff and quickly went on the attack. Eight seconds after Kempner had given F&M the lead, he fed McKew for the game winner.

The Generals got back within one when Spence Daw fired a behind the head shot past Cameron Setian with 59 ticks in the game. It was his fourth goal of the game.

The final 59 seconds were a scramble. Andrew Setian won his seventh faceoff of the day, but Joe LaSala forced a Kevin Kilpatrick turnover. Cooper Brown scooped the loose ball and carried the clear but Manhasset native Jimmy Wenk forced Brown to cough it up. F&M's Scott Beury jumped on the ground ball, but had it knocked loose by Jack Switala near midfield. The Generals fired a shot wide with 10.1 seconds remaining. After a timeout, they worked a play that gave Mark Wachmeister a good look from the left-hand side. His shot hit the outside of the net with three seconds left. F&M was able to throw the ball up the field to kill the clock.

McKew and Kempner each finished with a pair of goals and an assist. Andrew and Cameron Setain each had four ground balls for F&M, as did Josh Kanter and Jimmy King. King caused three turnovers, while Wenk forced two.

The game was a statistical dead heat with the exception of shots. W&L fired 33 to the Diplomats 23.

The Diplomats are 3-1 for the first time since since 2008. F&M returns to action on Tuesday against Susquehanna.
