Right on McKew

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – Colin McKew scored with 13 seconds left in the game to deliver Franklin & Marshall a 10-9 win over Washington College in Centennial Conference (CC) lacrosse on Saturday. The victory was only the Diplomats' (6-2, 2-1 CC) third through 41 meetings with the Shoremen (3-4, 1-2 CC).

McKew raced to the cage from the right side and buried a shot in the top left corner as he absorbed the blow of a defender. There was drama on the game-winning goal for the second Saturday in a row as McKew landed in the crease. As with last Saturday's overtime goal that went through the net, the officials had to convene before signaling the goal. McKew's first of the day provided the one-goal margin that is commonplace in this series. Six of the last seven meetings have now been decided by one goal.

The marker also provided F&M with its second consecutive win at home against Washington.

The game stayed within the series' prescribed script. As has been the case in the previous four meetings, F&M led after three quarters and Washington came storming back. Last year, Washington scored three goals in the fourth quarter for an 8-7 win. The year prior, F&M hung onto a 7-4 lead for a 7-6 win on Tylus Field. A 3-0 run in 2008 gave Washington a 12-11 win, while a three-goal spurt in the final 86 seconds of the 2007 meeting ended with a 6-5 Shoremen victory.

On Saturday, F&M led 9-5 early in the fourth quarter when Sean Kenny finished his hat trick. It appeared F&M was going to coast to victory. Then Washington went to work.

Less than two minutes after Kenny's third, Matt Lewis collected the rebound on one of Cameron Setian's dozen saves and rolled home a goal to make it 9-6. A little over three minutes later, Glen Tompkins scored his second - and Washington's third - extra-man goal of the day to cut F&M's lead to two. The Shoremen had eight extra-man opportunities in the game.

With 6:16 left in the game, Bennet Cord threw a long feed from the left side across the top of the box to Jim Cusick, who got Washington back within one. Billy Stafford's bounce shot over Setian's left shoulder with 3:34 left set the stage for McKew's heroics.

McKew also had two assists that gave F&M two two-goal leads. He set up a quick stick finish for Tristan Miller to make it 2-0 in the first quarter. Miller had F&M's first two goals. Billy Kempner assisted the first goal on the same play. Kempner scored a pair in the game. McKew's second assist was a perfect pass from the right side, finished by A.J. Reichart in the bottom left of Peter Stewart's cage. That made it 7-5 in the third quarter.

Stewart had 13 saves in absorbing the loss. Washington out-shot F&M 40-38. The Diplomats dominated on faceoffs, winning 15 of 22 draws. Andrew Setain took all of the faceoffs for F&M.

The Diplomats return to action on Wednesday against Scranton. It is the last non-conference game of the season for F&M.
