Haverford Wins in Triple Overtime

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – Myles Monaghan's extra-man goal in the third overtime delivered Haverford an 8-7, triple-overtime victory at Franklin & Marshall Saturday evening. The goal gave the Fords (9-3, 4-2 CC) their sixth-straight win over the Diplomats (8-4, 3-3 CC). It was the fourth time in five meetings that Haverford defeated the Diplomats by a single goal.

Monaghan's game winner went into the top-left corner at 69:37, completing his hat trick. It was three hours and 48 minutes after the designated start time. The game was delayed by an hour for lightning and another 41 minutes during a tornado warning.

Franklin & Marshall led for the bulk of the game, dominating the faceoffs and pressuring Haverford's clears. Defenseman Alexander Douglas tied it up, carrying the clear on his own to the center of the box. Unguarded, he fired a shot past Cameron Setain to knot it 6-6 with 1:05 left in the third. The Diplomats had led to that point and by as many as two on four occasions.

The Fords took their first lead of the game with 5:40 left in the fourth quarter. Travis Gregory streaked in from the top of the box and finished a perfect feed from Zack Cohen to make it 7-6. F&M's Tristan Miller tied it up with 3:58 left in the game, firing a turnaround jump shot from the left side past Joe Banno, forcing overtime.

Banno and Cameron Setain both offered superb performances. Banno stopped 18 while Setain turned away 10 shots. Banno stopped four in overtime, while Setain stopped three, including one while man-down.

The decisive extra-man opportunity came about as a result of a hit when F&M had appeared to have forced a Haverford turnover. The ball squirted to midfield where Jimmy King put a shoulder into a player with his head down. That sent King to the box for two minutes. Monaghan struck with six seconds left on the EMO.

Phillip Valiant scored a goal and assisted on three more for the Fords. Miller scored a pair and assisted on another for F&M. Colin McKew and Matt Gillan each scored a goal and assisted on another.

Andrew Setain won 14 of the game's 19 faceoffs and the Diplomats broke seven of the Fords 26 clear attempts. F&M outshot the Fords 39-35.

F&M returns to action on Wednesday at Gettysburg.
