Late Surge Dooms Diplomats

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel College scored the final three goals of the game to knock off visiting Franklin & Marshall 9-6 in Centennial Conference (CC) lacrosse Saturday evening. The late surge doomed the Diplomats (7-3, 2-2 CC) as three different players struck for the Green Terror (4-6, 1-3 CC) in the final quarter.

Ben Yancheski netted what stood up as the game-winner with 8:03 left in the game, cashing in on an extra man opportunity. It was the only goal scored on the EMO in the course of the game. Yancheski parked on the left post and buried a feed from J.S. Duke. Jed Barnes made it a two –goal game 1:03 later, intercepting a pass and carrying the clear on his own. He tossed a pass to Nicholas DiBernardo who sent it to the top corner to make it 8-6. Duke put the final nail in the coffin when Michael Young threw in a feed from the right sideline that Duke placed top shelf.

It was the second three-goal run by McDaniel in the contest. Franklin & Marshall had gotten on the board first when Matt Gillan threaded the needle on a cross-crease pass leaving Billy Kempner with an easy finish. A pair of goals from the Terror's D.J. Rickels, separated by 34 seconds, gave the Terror its first lead of the game. Rickels second goal appeared to sail wide of the right post and out of bounds, but the officials conferred and ruled it had slipped through a hole in the bottom of the net.

Skippy Clary made it a two-goal differential before F&M's offense went back to work. Jimmy Wenk and Matt Gillan scored consecutive long range goals to make it 3-3, but Duke answered just before the half.

F&M tied the game twice more, but McDaniel answered on each occasion.

Wenk knotted the game at 6-6 with his second of the day coming with 12:19 to play. It was the final tie of the contest. Wenk was F&M's only multiple goal scorer. Rickels finished the game with a hat trick for McDaniel, while Duke had a pair.

McDaniel's keeper, Christian Dallmus came up with seven saves, while Cameron Setian turned aside six.

The Diplomats return to action next Saturday at Swarthmore.
