Red Devils Pull Away Late

Box Score

CARLISlE, Pa. – Dickinson outscored Franklin & Marshall 3-1 in the final quarter to give the No. 6 Red Devils (14-1, 8-0 CC) a 10-8 win over the Diplomats (8-6, 3-5 CC) at Biddle Field on Saturday. Christian Beitel accounted for all three of the Red Devil's fourth quarter goals. Dickinson's win wrapped up a regular season sweep of the Centennial Conference.

Beitel scored back-to-back goals 1:13 apart early in the fourth quarter and added another one five minutes later. Brandon Palladino carried a clear end-to-end and underhanded a pass to Beitel to give him a point blank look at the Diplomats' keeper Cameron Setain. Beitel buried the shot top left to start his natural hat trick run. That goal put Dickinson out in front for good. His goal 73 seconds later held up as the game winner. Nearly five minutes elapsed without either team scoring a goal before he dumped in his third straight and fourth of the day.

Setian had a solid day in the cage, turning away a dozen of Dickinson's 37 shots. Greg Hanley was credited with 16 saves at the other end. F&M fired off 34 shots. Tristan Miller and Matt Gillan each scored twice, while Colin McKew was credited with an assist. Matt Cherry and Ward Gruppo each scored a pair for Dickinson.

F&M took a 3-2 lead in the first quarter, scoring back-to-back goals in the final 8.5 seconds of the opening frame. Miller collected an A.J. Reichart feed and bounced it home to make it 2-2 with 8.5 left. Andrew Setian won the ensuing faceoff and beat Hanley with one second showing on the clock. Setian won 14 of the game's 20 faceoffs. Connor Hewett's goal late in the second gave F&M a 5-4 lead heading into the halftime break.

Three different Devils scored to open the third quarter, giving Dickinson a 7-5 lead. It was the largest of the day until Beitel's run in the final quarter opened it up to three. Harrison Jones cashed in on a McKew feed to make it the 10-8 final.

The Diplomats dropped their third straight with the loss. It is F&M's only losing streak this season. The point was somewhat moot as Ursinus had ended F&M's playoffs hopes by beating Muhlenberg earlier in the day. The Diplomats only lose four players from the current roster, and will head into 2012 coming off of the first winning record since the 2008 season.
