Diplomats Dominate Swat

Box Score

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall freshman Cameron Setian recorded seven of his 13 saves before Swarthmore's Steve Selverian finally solved him 37:34 into Saturday's Centennial Conference (CC) tilt. It was too little too late for Selverian and company as the Diplomats' (8-3, 3-2 CC) offense had already ripped open an 8-0 lead before coasting to the finish line for an 11-5 win over the Garnet (3-8, 1-4 CC).

Tristan Miller, who finished the day with three goals and an assist, got the Diplomats on the board with a mid-air shot from four yards out, making good on Sean Kenny's behind the net feed. After Setain made his first of many point blank saves of the day while shorthanded, the Diplomats counterattacked. Matt Gillan inserted a pass from the right sideline to a cutting Keith Murray, who buried it top shelf to make it 2-0.

Murray tallied a second goal later in the game on an extra-man opportunity. The Diplomats were one-of-four man-up. The Garnet cashed in twice on six opportunities.

After Murray's first, Jimmy Wenk then netted his first of the day, splitting a pair of defenders on the left side of the crease and beating Jonathan Cohen low on the long side to make it 3-0. Wenk, a junior with nine career two-goal games heading into Saturday, finally broke through with his first career hat trick. His third goal came on a restart just before the third quarter came to an close. He made a run along the left-side goalline-extended and whipped it up under the crossbar with less than a second on the clock. His third of the day had answered Swarthmore's first pair of the game, making it 9-2 heading into the fourth quarter.

In addition to the pair of hat tricks, F&M got a pair of goals and assists from Billy Kempner, while Kenny finished the day with a goal and an assist. Andrew Setian won 15 of the game's 20 faceoffs, scooping five on his own. Kier Blevins and Freddy Schweizer each accounted for three of F&M's 35 ground balls in the game.

Max Hubbard was the only Garnet to register multiple goals in the game. He scored a pair. Swarthmore's obvious frustration bubbled to the surface a number of times throughout the game.  It was most apparent late in the fourth quarter when two players were penalized for unnecessary roughness having given Colin McKew the business after the Garnet had been flagged for slashing.

The Diplomats return to action next Saturday night when F&M hosts Haverford.
