Diplomats Drop Twinbill

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GLASSBORO, N.J. - Franklin & Marshall suffered a pair of losses to No. 25 Rowan in non-conference baseball action on Sunday. The Diplomats (2-3) fell 6-3 in the opener and 8-3 in game two. The Profs (6-0) remain unbeaten on the year with the sweep.

In game one, Rowan struck first with two runs in the bottom of the third. The Profs took advantage of a Diplomat error to register a pair of unearned runs with two outs in the frame.

F&M pulled within 2-1 in the top of the fourth after a Will Benenson single brought in J.T. Triantos from second, but the Profs responded with three additional runs in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. Rowan once again registered all of its runs with two outs, with Matt Hill delivering the key hit of the inning with a two-RBI single to center field.

Benenson added another RBI in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to center field that plated Aaron Gillette from third to bring F&M within 5-2. The Profs then notched a single tally in the seventh to once again jump out to a four run edge.

F&M put the pressure on Rowan in the ninth as it loaded the bases with just one away. Alex Vescera drew a walk, Gillette singled to center field and Connor Devlin also earned a free pass on a walk to load the bags for Benenson. An error by the Rowan relief pitcher Carlos Ruiz allowed Vescera to cross home plate and Benenson to reach first to bring the Diplomats within three, but Ryan Peterson took over on the mound for the Profs and earned the save with two straight outs.

Evan Lang (1-1) took the loss for F&M, allowing five runs, all unearned, on four hits while fanning three in four innings. Alex Guerra pitched the final four innings for the Diplomats and surrendered one run on four hits.

The Diplomats were not without their opportunities in the first game as they left 12 players on base throughout the contest, including seven that were in scoring position.

In the seven-inning nightcap, F&M jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the top of the second as Gillette singled up the middle to plate Brian Erb. The Profs bounced back, however, with four scores in the third and tacked on three more in the fifth to take a 7-1 lead.

Erb and Vecsera tallied RBI's in the sixth to bring the Diplomats within four, 7-3, but they would get no closer as the Profs went on to secure the 8-3 victory.

Brendan DeMond (0-2) suffered the defeat on the rubber in game two, while Andrew Lysy (2-0) picked up the win for Rowan.

The Diplomats return to the diamond on Tuesday at Messiah in non-conference action. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm in Grantham, Pa.
