Frostburg St. Outlasts F&M

Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - Franklin & Marshall dropped a 7-6 decision in 10 innings to Frostburg St. on day two of the Hampden-Sydney Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats fall to 0-2 with the loss, while the Bobcats move to 5-3.

It was a back-and-forth battle that featured two ties and four lead changes throughout the 10 innings of play. Trailing 2-0 after the top of the first, the Diplomats evened things up in the bottom half of the frame with an RBI double from Alex Vescera and a sacrifice fly from Will Benenson.

The Bobcats re-captured the lead in the top of the third, 4-2, after a two-out, two-RBI single by Danny Morris.

After stranding runners in scoring position in both the third and fourth innings, the Diplomats finally broke through with a four-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-4 edge. Matt Mezansky opened the frame with a double, while a Josh Mendelson hit-by-pitch and single from Joe Galitto gave F&M the bases loaded with one out. A fielder's choice on Aaron Gillette's grounder allowed Mezansky to touch home, and Alex Vescera followed with an RBI single to score Mendelson and knot the count at 4-4. With two outs in the frame, Benenson registered his second and third RBIs of the contest with a two-RBI triple to give F&M the two-run advantage.

Frostburg St. closed the gap to 6-5 with a score off of a Rob Jennings single in the seventh, before tying things up in the ninth with an RBI single from Kevin Kean. A one-out sacrifice from Nick McElfish in the top of the 10th proved to be in the difference in the 7-6 final.

Benenson paced the Diplomats with three RBIs, while Vescera went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Gillette went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored twice, and Mezansky added two hits and touched home once.

Morris and Kean led Frostburg St. with three hits and two RBIs apiece.

Kenny Georgius (3-0) picked up the victory on the mound for the Bobcats with four strikeouts in two innings of work, while Gillette (0-1) took the loss for F&M after surrendering one run in one inning.

The Diplomats wrap up a busy weekend at the Hampden-Sydney Tournament tomorrow with an 11:00 a.m. matchup opposite Rutgers-Newark.
