Box Score CARLISLE, Pa. –- No. 2 Dickinson edged Franklin & Marshall 12-10 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon. The Red Devils remained unbeaten on the year and improved to 15-0, 8-0 CC while F&M fell to 10-5, 6-2 CC.
The game determined the top seed in the CC Playoffs with Dickinson securing home field throughout. The Diplomats locked up the second seed and we host Gettysburg on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The appearance in the playoffs is the first for F&M since 2005 and the 10 wins in a season marks the first time since 1987-1988 that the Diplomats have put together back-to-back seasons with 10 wins or more.
Dickinson jumped out to an early 2-0 lead seven minutes into the game before the Diplomats went on a 4-0 run that spanned from the four-minute mark in the first to 8:10 in the second. Jamie McCulloch started the run with an unassisted tally at 3:57 and Billy Kempner made 2-2 with 21 seconds left in the first.
Kempner found Tristan Miller at 9:56 in the second to continue the run and Kempner hooked up with McCulloch 1:46 later to put F&M up 4-2. Dickinson countered with three unanswered scores to go up 6-5, but F&M responded with two straight to end the half with a 6-5 edge. Evan Baskst found A.J. Reichert at 1:20 to tie the game at 5-5 and McCulloch picked up his third score of the day with just eight seconds left to intermission.
Brian Cannon put one through seven seconds into the third quarter to tie the game before Tim Gaines found Kempner at 11:41 to put the Diplomat back up, 7-6. The Red Devils answered with a 5-1 run to take the lead for good. Dickinson started the run with two straight early in the third with Miller temporarily halting the spurt with a score at 8:40. Dickinson tallied three more after Miller's score and went up 11-8 with 12:06 left to play.
Philip Gamble found brother Chad Gamble to bring F&M within two, 11-9, at 7:57 and Matt Cherry struck for Dickinson at 4:35. F&M kept battling and Tommy Wenk netted a score with 2:56 to make it 12-10.
Carlos Pelaez, Jordan McLean and James King each caused two turnovers to pace the F&M defense. Mike Sanzone went 11-for-12 from the X with five ground balls while Kempner and Josh Kanter ended with ground balls apiece.
Cameron Setian had eight saves and fell to 10-5 while Greg Hanley went to 15-0 with 14 stops.
F&M outshot Dickinson 48-34, had 32 ground balls to the Devils' 27 and went 17-for-20 in clear attempts.
