Series History: Franklin & Marshall hits the road for a pair of away contests this week. The Diplomats travel to Alvernia on Wednesday for the first-ever meeting between the two sides in non-conference action, before opening up Centennial Conference (CC) play on Saturday at Washington College. The Diplomats hold a 23-8-7 advantage in the series against the Shoremen, including victories in each of the last two seasons.
Last Week: The Diplomats faced off against cross-town rival Elizabethtown in the annual Battle of the Boot last Friday at Tylus Field. F&M outshot the Blue Jays 17-8 and held a 17-1 advantage in corner kicks, but were unable to find the back of the net and the contest ended in a 0-0 double-overtime tie. Due to the tiebreaker rule giving the visiting team the boot in the event of a tie, the Blue Jays claimed the Smith-Herr trophy for the first time since 2009. Shutout Streak: The Diplomats have played 470 minutes of shutout soccer through five contests, earning them the No. 1 ranking in both team goals against average and shutout percentage in the NCAA national rankings. F&M is one of just two teams in the country, along with Tufts, to have not allowed a goal this season. The F&M defense has surrendered an average of just 6.6 shots and 1.4 corner kicks per game.
Record Book Watch: With five shutouts through the first five games, goalkeeper T.J. White now has 12 career shutouts, placing him fourth on the all-time list. Zach Zamek '10 holds the career shutout mark with 25.
In the Rankings: One week after claiming the No. 25 spot in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) National Rankings, the Diplomats dropped out of the top-25 but were one of four teams receiving votes. In the d3soccer.com poll, the Diplomats jumped two spots from No. 17 to No. 15 this week. Defending national champion Messiah remains at No. 1 in both national polls.
