Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – A career-high 30 points from Kristina McCarthy paced Franklin & Marshall, however the Diplomats fell to Johns Hopkins 62-61 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Wednesday evening. F&M dropped to 3-17, 1-12 CC, while the Blue Jays improved to 14-6, 12-3 CC.
With 7:03 remaining in the contest, McCarthy sank a layup to put the Diplomats ahead 57-49, however, Johns Hopkins rallied for 12 straight points and led 61-57 with 21 seconds to go. McCarthy followed with a layup and, after the Blue Jays made a free throw to go up 62-59 with nine seconds left, Sarah Haddon drained a bucket with two seconds remaining to bring F&M within one at 62-61.
On the following Johns Hopkins' inbound play, the Diplomats stole the ball but the clock ran out before a shot could be made as the Blue Jays held on for the 62-61 victory.
F&M opened the game on a 14-7 run, but Johns Hopkins countered with an 11-4 spurt to tie the game at 18-18 with 6:20 left in the first. From there, the Diplomats closed out the half on a 14-2 run and held a 32-20 advantage heading into intermission.
The Blue Jays began the second half on a 16-4 spurt to tie the game at 36-36 with 15:40 left in the game. Over the next seven minutes, the teams went back and forth and F&M led by four at 49-45 with 9:28 to go. The Diplomats extended the lead to eight at 57-49 until Johns Hopkins' rally put F&M away.
McCarthy's 30-point performance was the Diplomats' highest since Alexa Barbush's 34 points against Swarthmore on Feb. 9, 2013. Haddon also had a career night, finishing with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, eight rebounds, and a career-best six assists, while Sam Plunkett added 10 for F&M.
Liz Tommasi led the Blue Jays with 20 points, while Ciara Mccullagh added 13.
The Diplomats shot 46.4 percent from the floor and Johns Hopkins shot 42.6 percent. F&M outrebounded the Blue Jays 36-33.
The Diplomats return to the court on Saturday when F&M welcomes Washington to the Mayser Center. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
