F&M Sweeps Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Franklin & Marshall softball team swept its doubleheader on Monday afternoon in non-conference action at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. The Diplomats (3-3) defeated St. Mary's (Ind.) 7-0 before crushing Mount Mary 11-0 in five innings.

In the first matchup against Mount Mary (0-5), F&M got on the board early as Kaitlin Zampino doubled to score Sam DeNoville and Malorie Sassaman to give the Diplomats a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first. Caroline Abin added a single through the left side in the inning to score Zampino and extend the lead to 3-0.

After an Ashley Hartshorn groundout scored Sarah Kirk to put F&M up 4-0 in the bottom of the second, Sassaman singled to score Alicia Kukoda and give the Diplomats a 5-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, F&M began to run away with the game when Hartshorn singled to score Kelly Van O'Linda and Sassaman followed with another single to put the Diplomats ahead 7-0. DeNoville followed with a double to left field to score Rachel Laufer, and due to an error by the left fielder, DeNoville made it all the way home to put F&M up 9-0. Patricia Crigler then smacked a double to left center to score Abin and Patricia Smith to force the mercy rule.

Freshman Megan Ryan was brilliant on the mound for the Diplomats, throwing five innings while only surrendering one hit with nine strikeouts to pick up her first win of her career and the season.

Sassaman led F&M with three of its ten hits, while Abin added two hits.

In the nightcap against St. Mary's (1-3), the Diplomats scored early again when DeNoville hit a double down the left field line in the top of the first to score Kukoda and give F&M a 1-0 lead.

The Diplomats added more runs in the top of the third as Sassaman drilled a triple to right center to score Kukoda and Van O'Linda to give F&M a 3-0 lead. DeNoville followed with an RBI-single to score Sassaman and extend the lead to 4-0.

After a Kukoda single scored Laufer in the top of the sixth to give the Diplomats a 5-0 lead, Abin singled through the left side to make the score 6-0 before Caitlin Brust doubled to left to go up 7-0 as F&M completed the double-header sweep.

Sassaman and DeNoville each recorded three hits to lead the Diplomats, while Kukoda, Brust, and Laufer each added two.

Justine Lohrey was strong on the mound for F&M, throwing a complete game and giving up five hits while striking out two batters.

The Diplomats continues their Florida spring break trip tomorrow when F&M battles Mt. St. Mary (N.Y.) at 9:00 a.m. before taking on Ohio Wesleyan at 11:00 a.m.
