Box Score 2 WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Franklin & Marshall baseball team took game one of Sunday's non-conference double header against Catholic with a 4-2 score in 10 innings before falling 3-0 in the nightcap. The Diplomats' record evened at 2-2 on the year, while the Cardinals moved to 2-3.
F&M needed extra innings to dispatch the Cardinals in game one, rediscovering its offense in the final frame with a pair of runs off three hits to break a 2-2 tie.
Avery Attinson kicked off the 10th with a single down the right field line before advancing to second off a wild pitch. Luke Seib stepped to the plate and singled to place runners on first and third with no outs.
After Reed Williams laid down a bunt to advance Seib to third, Rob Anderson drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Pat Andrews followed with a single up the middle to score Attinson and give the Diplomats a 3-2 advantage before Matt Mezansky hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Seib and pushing the advantage to two.
Catholic threatened in the bottom of the inning and had a runner on second with only one out but reliever Andrew Green entered the game and forced the first batter he faced into a double play to seal the win.
F&M trailed 2-0 early in the contest after the Cardinals put runs on the board in the first and second innings. However, the Diplomats responded in the top of the fourth when an Attinson single to right field scored Joe Gallitto and Will Benenson to knot up the score.
Alex Guerra started the contest, going 5.1 innings, striking out a pair and allowing only two earned. Gareth Fancher, Paul Giulio (1-1) and Green combined to hold Catholic scoreless in 3.2 innings of relief, allowing only two hits over that span.
Attinson led the offense with a 2-for-4 effort that included a pair of RBIs and a run scored, while Benenson went 3-for-5 from the plate. F&M combined for 12 hits in the game compared to seven from the Cardinals, who stranded 10 base runners.
In game two, Catholic took a 2-0 lead in the third off of three hits in the frame before tacking on another with a sacrifice fly in the seventh to go ahead 3-0. The Diplomats offense struggled to produce as F&M's hitters collected only three hits in the contest and never threatened to send a runner across home plate.
Sean Cosgriff (0-1) was charged with the loss despite a solid outing. The junior lefty three seven innings and allowed only two earned while striking out five. His counterpart Kevin Farley was dominant for Catholic, tossing a complete game and striking out seven.
David Iacobucci collected two hits on the day in a 2-fo-3 effort from the plate while Anderson picked up the other, a single to second base in the top of the sixth.
The Diplomats return to action on Tuesday when F&M travels to take on Messiah at 2:30 p.m.
