Kempner Leads Diplomats Over Garnet

LANCASTER, Pa. – Billy Kempner scored two goals and handed out five assists to lead Franklin & Marshall to a 12-5 win over Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon. F&M improved to 10-3, 4-1 CC while the Garnet dropped to 4-8, 1-4 CC.  

Kempner increased his career total to 170 points and overtook Peter Bidstrup '86 for the sixth spot on the all-time points list at F&M.

The Diplomats led wire-to-wire and jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Kempner had a hand in every goal, assisting Ben Ross on the first at 12:29 before netting an unassisted goal at 5:46. Chad Gamble found Kempner at 1:34 to make it 3-0, but the Garnet managed an up-goal with just 37 seconds left to make it 3-1 at the end of the first. 

F&M tallied two straight in the second to increase its lead to 5-1 at 10:44. Kempner fed Michael Bossidy at 12:08 and Jamie McCulloch scored at 10:44 for the Diplomats. Chris Thomson put one through for the Garnet to bring Swarthmore within three, 5-2, but the Diplomats closed out the half with two unanswered scores. Mike Rama picked up the first score and Kempner found Bossidy for the second at 3:47. 

The Diplomats opened the second half with three unanswered goals and took a commanding 10-2 lead in the third quarter. John Barney and Rama netted the first two before Kempner and Bossidy hooked up for the third time at 3:55 in the third. The Garnet answered with two straight to make it 10-4 at the end of third. 

Kempner picked up his final point we he fed Ben Ross early in the fourth and Philip Gamble netted the last goal for F&M with an unassisted tally at 11:41. 

Bossidy finished with three goals while Rama and Ross both picked up a pair. McCulloch, Philip Gamble and Barney each finished with a goal for the Diplomats. 

Nicholas Zenobio caused three turnovers and picked up two ground balls to pace the defense while Carlos Pelaez and Chad Gamble each caused two turnovers. 

Mike Sanzone went 9-for-14 from the X and collected five ground balls on the afternoon.

Cameron Setian improved to 10-3 in the cage with six saves while Jonathan Cohen took the loss with 10 stops. 

F&M outshot Swarthmore 37-30, held a 35-24 advantage in ground balls and went 19-for-20 in clear attempts. 

The Diplomats return to action next Saturday when F&M travels to Haverford.
