Box Score LANCASTER, Pa. – The No. 6 Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team tied Alvernia by a 3-3 2OT score in a back-and-forth contest on Wednesday at Tylus Field. The non-conference match brought the Diplomats' record to 5-0-1 on the year, while the Crusaders moved to 3-3-1.
Chase TenBrook wasted little time netting his second goal of the season and giving F&M an early 1-0 lead just 1:11 into the first, taking a Jeremy Levine free kick and slipping the ball past Alvernia's goalkeeper.
The Crusaders were quick to respond, tallying the first goal of the season on the Diplomats' defense at the 18th minute of the first, knotting the score at 1-1. In the 33rd minute, Jared Bomba lofted a pass from the left side of the field to a waiting Sam Lane in the box, who sent a header past the goalkeeper to give F&M the advantage.
In the second, Alvernia managed to tie the game in the 68th, but just two minutes later, Lane netted his second of the game by breaking free on the left side of the field and beating the goalkeeper to his right to give the Diplomats a 3-2 lead.
A costly F&M turnover deep in its defensive zone led to one last tally from the Crusaders, tying the score at 3-3 in the 75th minute. In the first overtime, Lane had a look on net at the top of the box but Alvernia's goalkeeper was there to corral the scoring chance.
In the second overtime, the Crusader's rushed the net for one last chance but Trevor Britton made an aggressive play, charging out from goal and forcing a shot that sailed high over the crossbar.
F&M was dominant in shots at 20-11, including a 10-6 margin the second half. The Diplomats also held the edge on corners at 6-3. Lane led the way with seven chances, while Janse Schermerhorn recorded five.
Britton (5-0-1) registered a pair of saves in 110 minutes of action, while Alvernia's Zach Rider (3-3-1) picked up 10 saves on the day.
F&M begins Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday when the Diplomats travel to face off against Swarthmore at 4:00 p.m.
