Box Score FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – A late penalty stroke goal from Mary Kate Olson capped off three straight scores for the No. 7 Franklin & Marshall field hockey team and put the seal on a 4-3 come-from-behind win against No. 16 Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Diplomats improved to 3-0 with the win, while the Eagles fell to 2-1.
Trailing 3-1 in the 53rd minute, F&M's offense went to work, cutting the deficit to one with a timely goal from Maria Guarisco, her third of the year. Lauren Eastman followed suite in the 66th minute, tallying her second of the contest to tie the game late.
Just two minutes remained in regulation when Olson lined up for the penalty stroke opportunity and the reigning All-American delivered by sending her shot into the back of the cage to wrap up the four-goal second half and hand the Diplomats a thrilling comeback win.
Mary Washington controlled the opening stanza and entered halftime with a 2-0 lead. However, the second half belonged to F&M as Lauren Eastman's first score of the afternoon came just three minutes in.
The Eagles' Christine Downie answered off a corner in the 46th, before the Diplomats' barrage of tallies closed out the game.
Allie Morey (3-0) earned the win after turning away a pair of shots, while Mary Washington's Megan McLaughlin was dealt the loss.
The Diplomats led in shots by a 19-8 margin, including a dominant 14-2 mark in the second half. Guarisco paced her team with five shots, followed by three apiece from Clare Wirth and Sydney Cole.
F&M returns to action tomorrow in Fredericksburg with a 12:00 p.m. game against St. Mary's (Md.)
