Diplomats Place Three at David H. Lehman F&M Open

LANCASTER, Pa. – Robert Ruiz captured third at 141, while Patrick Quinlan (133) and Rob King (157) each registered a fourth-place showing to pace Franklin & Marshall's wrestling team at the third annual and newly-minted David H. Lehman F&M Open on Saturday in Lancaster. No team score was recorded at the tournament.

Ruiz landed the second top-three finish of his career at the open, previously taking second at 133 in 2013. The senior grappler opened the tournament with a pair of wins before falling by a 9-6 decision in the semifinals to Lock Haven's Matt Bryer. Ruiz battled back in consolations, advancing to the third-place title match with an 8-2 decision, a medical forfeit and a pin at 1:07. 

He capped off his day with his second straight fall, taking down Lock Haven's Bobby Rehm at the end of the first period. Jason Bing also competed at 141, earning three wins on the day, including a major and a tech. fall. 

Following a narrow 9-6 loss in his opening bout, Quinlan caught fire with four consecutive wins in the consolation bracket, including a 26-9 tech fall victory and a 21-9 major, before having to settle for fourth after a 14-4 defeat in the battle for bronze. 

Competing at 157, King earned a pair of wins in the championship bracket, including a thrilling 9-7 tally in sudden victory before falling into consolations. King rattled off five straight wins to earn a spot in the third-place match, but came up short by a 13-5 mark against Millersville's Shane Ruhnke. 

Edgar Garcia went 3-2 at 125, picking up a pair of pins and a decision, while Michael Marano earned two decisions and Tommy Quinlan picked up a 5-0 victory at 149. Colin Gironda and Andrew Francos both reached the consolation semifinals at 165 after falling in their opening bouts. Gironda responded with four consecutive wins, three of which came by decision, while Francos picked up a major, a decision and a pin in consolations. 

Gordon Bolig responded to an opening round loss at 174 with a 10-3 decision in the wrestlebacks, however his day came to an end with a narrow 4-2 loss against Bloomsburg's Auston Hummel. 

At 197, Charles Kerkesner reached the championship semifinals with three straight win but came up short against Princeton's Ian Baker by a 9-4 decision. Following a defeat in his first championship bout, Antonio Pelusi recorded a pair of wins in the consolations with a pin at 2:58 and a 3-2 decision. 

Alex Henry went 2-2 in the 285 bracket, taking down his opening opponent with a first-period pin at 1:59 and registering a 5-3 win in sudden victory in consolations. 

The Diplomats return to the mat on Saturday, Jan. 17 for the Diplomat Duals. Action begins at 10:00 a.m.
