Box Score HAVERFORD, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's No. 1 ranked men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, a 3-1 heartbreaker against Haverford on Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference (CC) competition.
The defeat dropped the Diplomats to 14-1, 6-1 CC and moved the Fords into sole possession of first place in the conference at 12-3, 7-0 CC. Saturday's result snapped a 34-game regular season win streak for F&M, a mark that dated back to Oct. 19, 2013.
As has been the Diplomats' calling card throughout the season, F&M showed its offensive prowess in the opening minutes of the game. Ugo Okolie provided an initial attempt on net, firing a hard shot that was turned back by Haverford's goalkeeper, however, Chase TenBrook was there for the short rebound to the near post for a 1-0 lead. The score was TenBrook's team-leading 11th of the season, and improved the senior forward's goal streak to five straight.
F&M's lead was short lived. Six minutes after the Diplomats' score, the Fords followed with a marker of their own when a pair of slick passes on the left side of the box led to a Tejan Walcott goal to even the game at 1-1.
The momentum swung in Haverford's favor and remained that way throughout the remainder of the frame as the Ford's added a penalty kick tally in the 26th minute and went ahead by a 3-1 score with Sam Yarosh's CC-leading 14th of the season - a shot from 18 yards out in the 37th.
Despite leading the second-half shot count at 9-7, F&M was unable to light the scoreboard en route to the two-goal loss. Overall shots narrowly favored the Fords at 16-15, while the Diplomats held the edge on corners at 7-6.
Trevor Britton (14-1) stopped a season-high six shots, but was charged with the loss after surrendering a trio of goals through 90 minutes, while Haverford's Sam Miller (12-3) picked up four saves for the win.
F&M continues action on the road this Wednesday, traveling to Gettysburg for a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
