Box Score LANCASTER, Pa. – John Barney tallied five goals to lead Franklin & Marshall to a 14-5 victory over Haverford Saturday evening in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action. The Diplomats improved to 7-7, 4-2 CC while the Fords dropped to 4-8, 1-5 CC.
Seniors Timothy Mattessich, Vann Jorgensen, Jeffrey LaForge, Connor Melillo, Will Ballantyne, Phil Gamble, Ben Ross, Chad Gamble and John Barney were honored before the game in special senior day ceremony.
F&M went on the board first when Chad Gamble found Sean Rogers at 10:33 and took a 2-0 lead five minutes later when Barney buried a pass from Philip Gamble. Philip Gamble made it 3-0 at 3:51 while Barney netted his second off an assist from Rogers 46 seconds later and Mike Wasik put the Diplomats up 5-0 at the end of the first.
Barney started the second with a natural hat trick in the first eight minutes of action off two feeds from Chad Gamble. Chad Gamble found Michael Bossidy with a little under a minute to play in the third to give the Diplomats a 9-0 lead at the break. Bossidy's goal was the 100th point of his career.
Bossidy connected with Ben Ross early in the third to make 10-2 and the Fords answered with two straight. The Diplomats countered with a 4-0 run and took a 14-2 lead early in the fourth. Sean Brown started the run midway thought the third before Read Zeigler struck at 4:49. Philip Gamble and Michael Bossidy teamed for a score at the end of the third and Mike Wasik put the last point on the board for F&M early in the fourth.
Connor Melillo paced the defense with four caused turnovers and nine ground balls while Timothy Mattessich picked up the win in goal with two stops and four ground balls and improved to 7-7.
F&M outshot Haverford 36-18, held a 49-27 edge in ground balls and went 18-for-23 in clear attempts.
The Diplomats return to action on Wednesday when F&M hosts No. 2 Gettysburg at 4:00 p.m.
