Johns Hopkins Outlasts F&M

Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md. – A late 9-0 run allowed Johns Hopkins to beat out Franklin & Marshall 63-58 in hotly-contested Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats fell to 5-17, 3-12 CC with the loss while the Blue Jays improved to 10-12, 7-8 CC.

Tied at 50 with 4:17 left in the fourth quarter, Johns Hopkins put together a 9-0 run over the next 3:25 to take a 59-50 lead with 52 ticks left on the clock. A layup from Sarah Haddon and a pair of threes from Lindsey Powers cut the lead back to five, 63-58, with six seconds left, but it proved too little too late as the Blue Jays escaped with the victory.

The nine-point advantage was the greatest for either team in what was a tight contest from the opening tip. F&M went up early in the first, taking a 10-5 lead after Sarah Pisani found Erica Brown for an easy layup on the break. Buckets from Devandria Bernard and Haley Pilone kept the lead at five, but a late 5-0 spurt from the Blue Jays tied the game at 16 after one.

The score remained close in the second, with neither team able to take a lead of more than three. Haddon and Shannon O'Connor each contributed a late free throw as the game entered halftime tied at 27.

Johns Hopkins threatened to open a meaningful lead early in the third quarter, putting together an 8-1 run to start the frame. However, the Diplomats answered with an 8-0 run of their own to take a 36-35 advantage with 3:52 left in the period. Neither team led by more than one for the remainder of the quarter, and a late bucket from the Blue Jays gave the hosts a 41-40 lead entering the final stanza.

A pair of baskets from Pilone kept the Diplomats close as the teams continued to trade points early in the third. Later, a clever inbound pass from Pisani found Bernard underneath to tie the score at 50, but Johns Hopkins made six successive stops to power the decisive run.

Haddon shot 6-for-14 to lead the Diplomats with 17 points. Brown went 6-for-8 from the line to record 12, while Pilone added 11 and Powers finished with 10.

Brown also pulled in 10 rebounds to complete her eighth double-double of the year. Powers and Haddon notched eight boards each.

Liz Tommasi made six triples on the night to lead the Blue Jays with 18 points. Marissa Varnado scored 13 off the bench, and Katie Clark reached double digits with 12.

F&M returns to action on Monday, visiting Ursinus at 8:00 p.m. in a game rescheduled from Wednesday.
