F&M Draws With Oglethorpe

Box Score

LANCASTER, Pa. – One-hundred and 10 minutes of play on a hot and muggy evening in Lancaster ended with neither team finding the back of the net, despite a multitude of chances from each, as the No. 12 Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team played Oglethorpe to a 0-0 2OT draw on Saturday.

The non-conference decision moved the Diplomats to 3-0-2 on the season as the Stormy Petrels now sit at 0-3-1.

Scoring opportunities favored F&M in the opening stanza as a breakdown in the Oglethorpe defense 18 minutes in led to a wide-open chance on net for Connor Whitacre. The Stormy Petrels' goalkeeper stormed out of the net for a loose ball in the box and misplayed it, however, a charging Oglethorpe defender got in front of Whitacre's shot and sent the attempt wide.

In the second, a Stephen Sherbahn steal from 40 yards out led to another golden chance on net for the Diplomats. Sherbahn charged the goal but sent a shot just high of the crossbar in the 52nd minute as the game remained scoreless. With just 2:52 left in regulation, Ugo Okolie dropped off a short pass to Ben Draheim from 18 yards out. The attempt appeared destined for the top center of the goal, but Oglethorpe's 'keeper managed to get a hand on the ball and send it out of bounds.

The first overtime period saw the Stormy Petrels challenge with 3:20 left to go when Stefan Williams got behind the Diplomat defense and stormed the net. Goalkeeper Dave Reingold made an aggressive play on the ball, sliding in front of Williams' and grabbing the attempt.

Reingold came up huge again in the second overtime. With 8:52 left to go in the period, Topher Marshall sent a shot on net from 10 yards out. However, Reingold made a game-saving, diving stop to his right. Draheim played in a corner with two minutes left to provide late life for F&M. The ball was knocked around in the box before a Wyatt Fabian shot was blocked in front, as the game ended in a scoreless tie.

Reingold (3-0-2) was impressive, stopping three shots for his second shutout in two days. His counterpart Luke Whelan (0-2-1) was charged with the loss after registering five stops.

The Diplomats dominated shots and corners at 19-9 and 13-3, respectively. Okolie and Draheim each tallied three shots to pace the offensive attack.

Non-conference competition continues for F&M on Wednesday when the Diplomats travel to take on Elizabethtown in the annual Smith-Herr Boot game. Action is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
