GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's men's soccer team held off a second-half surge to down Gettysburg by a 3-2 score on the road Wednesday evening.
The Diplomats passed the Bullets for second place in the Centennial Conference (CC) standings, with just two games remaining, and improved to 7-5-2, 5-1-1 CC on the year while the Bullets, who received votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches National Poll, fell to 11-3, 5-2 CC.
Offensively, F&M came out firing with a goal in the fourth minute of action. Ryan Fincher sent a freekick into the left side of the box that was headed into the back of the net by Max Geuder, his second of the season, for the 1-0 edge.
Ryan Corr followed with two-straight scores in the 11th and 19th minutes to hand the Diplomats a commanding 3-0 lead. Stephen Sherbahn set up the first goal, heading a pass over to Corr who directed a header of his own on net.
Fincher was credited with his second assist of the game after another well-placed free kick found Corr for a header in front to make it 3-0.
Gettysburg got one back in the closing minutes of the frame by scoring off a throw-in from the right sideline. Just two minutes after the break, the Bullets cut the deficit to one with a rocket from the top of the box to make the score 3-2.
With 1:30 remaining in the game, Gettysburg mounted an attack in its offensive third and sent a rising shot toward the crossbar. However, goalkeeper Christopher Amoruso left his feet and punched out the attempt for the game-preserving save.
Amoruso finished with six saves in 90 minutes to improve to 4-1-1. His counterpart, Max Karen (6-2) was dealt the loss after recording three saves and allowing three goals.
Gettysburg led in shots by a 16-12 mark and corners at 6-4. Jason Tonelli paced the Diplomats with five shots. CC-leading scorer Patrick Santini (18 goals) tallied five shots but was held scoreless for just the fourth time this season.
F&M closes out the week on Saturday, traveling to Washington for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
