Rogers Leads F&M Past Garnet

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Sean Rogers tallied seven goals and handed out an assist to lead Franklin & Marshall to a 15-9 victory over Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats picked up their fifth-straight win and improved to 5-2, 1-0 CC while the Garnet fell to 5-3, 0-1 CC. 

F&M jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with four goals from Rogers. Kevin Mollihan assisted on the first one and Wyatt Richins fed on the last two scores of the run. The Garnet put their first point on the board with six seconds on the clock to make it 4-1 heading into the second.

Swarthmore netted two straight in the first 30 seconds of the second to come within a goal, but F&M countered with three straight and took a 7-3 lead with 56 seconds left in the second. Tucker McBride finished off a pass from Mollihan for the first score, Mike Rama buried a pass from Shane McBride at 2:01 and Kip Wyrough found Read Ziegler for the final score. The Garnet tacked on one more to make it 7-4 at the break.

George Briggs and Jarett Donaghy struck early in the third for a 9-4 F&M lead and the Garnet ended the third with three unanswered to come within two, 9-7, at the end of the third.

Swarthmore came within a goal, 9-8, early in the fourth, but F&M netted four straight and went up 13-8 at 8:11. Rogers and Mollihan both netted two in the run before the Garnet put its last point on the board at 7:29. F&M closed out the game with two straight with a goal from Donaghy and Rogers to seal the victory.

Rogers finished with seven goals and an assist, Mollihan had two scores with two assists and Donaghy netted two as well.  Rama, Zeigler and McBride all had a score, while Richins finished with two helpers and Wyrough along with S. McBride both had an assist.

Donaghy led the defense with two caused turnovers with seven ground balls, Tommy O'Connor caused two turnovers and three ground balls and Nick Zenobio had three ground balls with two caused turnovers.

Scott Hatch improved to 5-2 with six stops and Cole Fox took the loss with 13 saves.

F&M outshot the Garnet 45-25, went 16-for-18 on clear attempts and held a 29-21 edge in ground balls. 

The Diplomats return action on Wednesday when F&M hosts Gettysburg at 4:00 p.m.
